Product Description

Product Description

For many years the Algarve has not been considered as a 'real' walking destination. That opinion is rapidly changing. An increasing number of people are beginning to realise that there is far more to this area than first meets the eye - besides a spectacular and dramatic coastline, there is a huge interior that sees very few visitors. Here the varied geology helps produce a rich range of scenery from volcanic hills to dramatic limestone escarpments. This diversity is complemented by the local flora and fauna that flourish in the equable climate of mild, sunny winters and long, hot summers. All this, combined with a local population that is warm and generous, makes walking here fascinating. The walks in this guide will take you right away from the large tourist developments so that you too can discover the huge welcoming heart of the Algarve.

About the Author

Julie Statham has been leading walks on the Algarve and throughout Portugal since leaving England in 1998. Julie is passionate about the environment and conservation and the potential of the Algarve for walking. She is constantly seeking new paths and trails - 'it's an obsession!' Besides her walking company she also runs a walking club for residents.

A great way to visit 12 Feb 2007
Format:Paperback
Having given up on walking the west coast from South to North (the south was covered in tracks and then as you go further north the vegetation becomes too dense), we used this guide to discover some fantastic landscapes.

In a few places the tracks have changed and sometimes the guide could be more precise, for example: not clear if the house you pass on your left is before or after you turn off.

Will write to the publisher with suggested corrections so next edition will be even better!

bees attack 12 April 2011
Format:Paperback
Having tried most of the walks suggested by the book we have found it generally useful but it is not always accurate or easy to follow and often we have had to search for the locally provided painted markers on stones to check we were on the right route We could live with that but recently we tried one of the walks suggested by the book ( hilltops and orange groves) in an area near silves and found that the suggested route took you up a long pathway with fields of beautiful wild flowers alongside and, unfortunately, close to a large number of bee hives- as it was the pollinating season our party were attacked and stung by large swarms of bees. Luckily none of our party suffered anyphylactic shock but the book should have contained a warning that this whole area should be avoided during the pollinating season. So enjoy the book but be prepared to do extra research before setting out

Lost in the Alagarve 2 July 2010
Format:Paperback
The only good thing about this book is that it does take you to interesting walking areas. However, the directions are seriously confusing and ambiguous, well below par for a professional publication. The maps are slightly better than those of the first edition in having an indication of North, but you can still easily become hopelessly lost if you depend on the directions. It would help greatly if ms Statham could give some indication of the distances between key points, rather than saying things like "this goes on for a while". The military maps of Portugal available in many good booksellers might help her to make the directions better. We look forward to the next edition.
