Product Description

The world goes mad in 1914. And in the chaos, on the blood-soaked fields of the Ypres Salient, young humanitarian John Armitage meets a British nurse, Evelyne Grenville, a lady with admirable courage and a secret. Could they possibly make a difference, offering solace at the Western Front? Will Evelyne's secret life bring calamity on them both?

Their ensuing philanthropic life course encounters joy, forgiveness, horrific tragedy and a special-needs boy who shows the way to recovery.

It's a ninety-year journey for the Armitages. It's a Walk to Paradise Garden.

4.0 out of 5 stars Paradise indeed. 2 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Walk to Paradise Garden,
By
John Campbell.

This is the story of John and Evie, who meet at the front, during the First World War. He is a stretcher bearer, she is a nurse, and as far as John's concerned, it's love at first sight.

Walk to Paradise Garden spans the years between the early twentieth century, right up to the early 21st. Along the way, the reader enters the rich tapestry of John and Evie's lives, woven with such depth and perception that one feels one can step through the pages and join them in their journey. John Campbell is a consummate writer. His prose flows and carries anyone lucky enough to come across this book into the three dimensional world he's created.
I've added it to my Kindle library and will read it again and again, knowing I will never tire of the colour, the sadness and the happiness of its characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly breathtaking read 9 July 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
From the trenches of Ypres to the horrors of 9/11, Walk to Paradise Garden takes us on an absorbing 90-year journey spanning the lives of two remarkable characters - John and Evelyne Armitage. Definitively "English" in tone, and far more Upstairs than downstairs, it tells of how they surmount personal tragedy (the book's title refers to one particular loss) and the onslaught of evil minds to use their wealth and privilege for good - setting up homes and orphanages for disadvantaged children and emerging as two of the century's most sensitive philanthropists. I personally found this book extremely life-affirming, and satisfying on so many levels. Great writing too - John Campbell makes us really CARE for the characters, even when they turn out to be jewel-thief polygamists!

Five stars, highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rewarding story. 6 Jun 2012
By Marj
Format:Paperback
I am pleased that I bought this book as a real book rather than as a mere ebook. It is one to savour - a most rewarding read.
The story covers the lives of the Armitage family from the time of the first world war to 2001 - the twin towers tragedy. They are philanthropists, starting with a quite small orphanage, and eventually expanding to schools in third world countries.
There are good times and bad, and there are tragedies - everyone has their tragedy, and John And Evelyn Armitage are no exception. Near to the very last page are some words by Evelyn about teaching children to be resiliant. She uses the example of making a garden - that when a storm comes along and destroys it, then one starts again, that in this life, one needs to be resiliant. Wise words from the character Evelyn, and from the author, John Campbell.
5 stars for this book.
