5.0 out of 5 stars A master of his art. 18 Nov 2010
Format:Audio CD
The change of label from United Artists to Musicor, also heralded a gradual change of musical direction, from hard edged honky tonk to a much more upmarket sound, more in keeping with the dominant Nashville sound.During this period George recorded some of his biggest, and most enduring hits. These are the songs that secured his reputation. Some of the most sublime recordings ever in country music. The voice is smoother, and deeper enabling a vocal range to sing those jaw clenching, gut wrenching ballads of emotion, which had become his trademark.
Not all is good.George had a habit of filling out albums with the recent hits of other artists. Some of these sloppily sung versions are dreadful, reeking of conveyor belt, going through the motions efforts.Others are acceptable,or good. His duets with Melba Montgomery suffer from weak material, and lack the intensity and chemistry of their earlier recordings. He also had the habit of re-recording past hits every time he changed label.Seldom do these ever come close to matching the originals.Don't be put off.The majority of the 142 songs in this set are superb, wonderfully interpreted by someone deservedly considered as the greatest country singer of all time.
