Product Description

A Brand-New walking guide by Manchester author Clarke Rogerson includes a route in and around Middleton, making it an ideal excuse to get out and about this spring. Each of the 35 walks in the book are close enough to home for Middletonians to try them all. Details for each route include information on the walk itself, such as difficulty and time needed, as well as practical information such as the nearest pub and railway station. --Middleton & North Manchester Guardian Book Description The concept for this series of walks was conceived, as these things often are, over a few pints with a group of like minded friends. Fuelled with bonhomie and wanting to get out into the hills on a regular basis, unencumbered by the car, and not restricted to a quick half before driving home, the idea "let's see how many walks we can do using that cheap rail ticket" was born. I don't remember volunteering, but the task of planning was left to me. As with all walking groups, this bunch was a bit choosy; high quality routes were definitely expected. We cover four counties, taking in ancient tracks, packhorse routes, six rivers and four canals. There's plenty of interest along the way; something for everyone including art, archaeology, bird watching, botany, industrial and landscape history. I've included the record breakers - deepest, highest, longest and shortest. Add the promise of real ale served in more than a few pubs and local food cooked on the premises, and you have walking utopia. 35 fully detailed walking routes all accessible by the cheap rail ticket. Every route includes; walking route summary, ratings for Effort, Time, Distance, Ascents/Descents, Refreshments and Vertigo risk, fully detailed walk description including frequent timings to aid navigation, GPS waypoints for pin-point navigational accuracy, full colour Ordnance Survey licenced mapping. A unique book of 35 walking adventures, all accessible on the Greater Manchester rail network, just waiting for you to discover them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent walking guide for the South Pennines, 2 Jan 2006

This review is from: Walk the South Pennines (Spiral-bound)
This book is full of interesting and useful information on the area described as the South Pennines, it's hard to imagine but within 20 minutes of leaving the hustle and bustle of central Manchester you can be in the wildest and most lovely countryside.

The idea that all of the walks can be accessed by purchasing a cheap 'Day Ranger' ticket for the train is a novel one but entirely practical, no worrying about your car being safe or having to limit yourself to only one well earned pint in the pub! The book is full of interesting facts and information which helped even this old Mancunian get to know more about the area. There are walks for every ability and all the walks are graded so you know just what you are letting yourself in for before you start. The pocket size and spiral binding is such a good idea meaning that you can have the pages needed for your walk easily visible without spoiling the book.

This is a thoroughly entertaining read, much more than a list of walks. I would recommend it to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a brilliant concept for a walking guide, 4 Jan 2006
By A Customer
This review is from: Walk the South Pennines (Spiral-bound)
The author of this book has solved a walking dilemma here, as well as writing some excellent clearly described routes.

There are some wonderful walks in this region. There are also some excellent hostelries. Usually the relaxation in a welcoming pub after an exhilarating walk has to be curtailed if you must drive home. This book solves the problem as the author has worked out a varied network of routes that can be accessed using the train network. Plus there are good cheap tickets.

I like the design of the book and the maps for every walk (OS) with routes overlaid. If you are into GPS you will really appreciate the waypoints provided for the routes. There is plenty of variety too - easier routes, tough routes, long routes, shorter routes, etc. Something for everyone who wants to walk.

This is an excellent book - heartily recommended.
