Product Description

Product Description

Walk Scotland is a guidebook with a difference as Bruce Sandison takes the reader on 125 of his favourite walks - from the Shetland Isles to the Borders, including three excursions in the land of Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland - combining practical information of indigenous flora and fauna with local history and the author's personal knowledge of these routes in his beloved native land.

Each walk is a complete story in itself. Sandison recounts his own experiences during a lifetime spent exploring Scotland's countryside: a first kiss among the trees of the 'T' Woods at Swanston, near Edinburgh; discovering Skara Brae in Orkney, before the tourists. His sense of humour is never far behind as he remembers those who walked these ways in days gone by: Mary, Queen of Scots, dashing from Jedburgh to Hermitage Castle to comfort her lover, incurring the wrath of Presbyterian Scotland for doing so; and Bonnie Prince Charlie holding 'court' behind Ben Corridale on South Uist.

Including walks to suit all standards of fitness, this book is beautifully illustrated with colour photographs. Ordnance Survey grid references are noted for routes, start- and finishing-points and key markers along the way. At once a practical guide and an evocative account of the history permeating these stunning landscapes, Walk Scotland is a must for all would-be walkers and lovers of the Scottish countryside.

About the Author

Bruce Sandison lives and works in Sutherland, in the far north of Scotland. He has had ten books published and regularly contributes to The Scotsman, The Herald and BBC Wildlife Magazine on environmental matters.

Excellent Walking Guide 11 April 2006
Format:Paperback
If you are wanting to go on some interesting walks in Scotland then this is a fantastic book as it gives you a wide range of mountain walks, coastal walks and forest walks. Bruce also gives an excellent explanation of the history of the area and also some of his own experiences. It most of the areas of Scotland and will provide you with some walks that you may never thought of youself. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys walking and the countryside.

Disappointing practical guide for tourists 19 Nov 2004
By J. Reber - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I was looking for a practical guide to choose and find hikes on a planned trip to Scotland. This guide does not appear useful to me. Information on length of hike and difficulty are buried in the text which often begins with a personal story. In order to follow the indicated hike, it looks like you need an ordinance survey map (different map for each hike). Instructions on finding the starting point for the hike often seem vague and are buried in the text.

The guide might be useful if you are more familiar with Scotland and were interested in the personal stories.
