Review

Seeing Right to Roam as an opportunity to revitalise walking in the Peak District, Mr Westcott's fieldwork began with a walk over Parkhouse and Chrome Hills near Longnor - the start of a 10 month campaign and around 300 miles of walking. The walks cover the whole of the national park south of a line between Macclesfield and Chesterfield, including both the limestone of the Derbyshire Dales and gritstone country around Chatsworth and Stanton Moor. --Ashbourne News

--Ashbourne News Book Description What makes walking in the south Peak District so interesting is that this is a landscape of constant change, from the annual rhythm of the farming seasons to the slower changes to land use and human activities that take place over generations. This is no 'unspoiled' landscape, but it absorbs and heals the scars of man's activities over the years, from copper and lead mining to quarrying; all have become essential components of the landscape we see today. All 32 walking routes include: walking route summary, ratings for Effort Time Distance Ascents/Descents Refreshments and Vertigo risk, fully detailed walk description including frequent timings to aid navigation and check your progress, GPS waypoints at every key point on every route, full colour 1:40,000 scale Ordnance Survey licenced mapping for each route, short walk and stroll alternatives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must-have guide to Peak walking, 7 Feb 2006
By A Customer
This review is from: Walk the Peak District: South: 1 (Paperback)
Westcott's take on the Peaks is refreshingly up to date. It's GPS ready so if, like me, you port one of those devices, you've all that added reassurance. Brand new concessionary paths over R2R areas are thoroughly researched and give fresh perspectives on classic routes, and it's written in a lively and inclusive style as opposed to the usual 'worthy anorak' manner. The spiral binding is an excellent idea - slips into a map case open where you want it, and the colour mapping and pictures are a treat.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best walking book I've found for the Peak District, 4 Jan 2006
By A Customer
This review is from: Walk the Peak District: South: 1 (Paperback)
I have quite a few books on walking in this area, but this has to be the best. The author obviously knows his stuff and gets in interesting background information along with his detailed walk descriptions. Some of the routes are challenging but there are easier options as well. I have just got my first GPS and am getting into using the waypoints for the routes - really useful. I like the detail on such things as timings, directions, ascents and descents, and recommended pubs of course.

It is right up to date with the latest OS Right To Roam maps, and new routes on land recently opened to the public. Good photos as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny, 23 Jan 2006
By A Customer
This review is from: Walk the Peak District: South: 1 (Paperback)
As soon as you start reading through Walk! The Peak District South, it is obvious that the author knows his stuff and loves his region.

The walk description are clear with plenty of detail such as compass directions, timings, amount climbed/descended. The maps are latest right to roam OS overlaid with GPS tracks and waypoints- really accurate. You can load the waypoints into your GPS to follow in the author's footsteps. Good photos as well.

I have done 3 of the routes so far. Based on these, I feel I can warmly recommend this guidebook. I have really enjoyed following the routes and am eager to get out there again.
