Using a studio mastering grade external DAC & ATC speakers I found the mastering on this CD to be superior to that on a number of other compilations, including two other good ones, namely The Essential Dionne Warwick 40th Anniversary Edition (WEA 2004) & The Very Best Of Dionne Warwick (Rhino 2000). This is the best mastered set of original classic Dionne Warwick songs that I have found to date. Prior to this CD, I always found that these original recordings from the 60s tended to sound slightly veiled & muddy, with Dionne's vocals presented rather back in the soundstage mix (i.e. recessed), slightly rolled off in the top end & with some of the loud passages in her singing sounding constrained (either manually gain ridden or electronically compressed) &/or clipped (saturation distortion), resulting in a less than satisfactory rendition of presence & realism. I know that these recordings are over 40 years old now, but Verve managed to make many recordings 10 years earlier which sounded great, even by today's standards, so I put this down to Warner using different microphone & recording methodology. Anyway, this CD does about the best job I have heard of extracting what is available on the masters. Do not expect a chalk & cheese difference, because there is only so much a mastering engineer can do. I think this CD was mastered by Giovanni Scatola, who also did impressive work on the recent Linda Ronstadt Greatest Hits Vol 1 & 2 CD (Rhino/WEA UK 2007 - the green one) which is also a noticeable improvement on any previous Ronstadt release. At last we have found a mastering engineer who cares about what he is doing & knows how to do a good job. On this Dionne Warwick CD, the vocal presentation is slightly more forward, the vocals (& instruments) are slightly cleaner & more accurately imaged which gives better clarity & the EQ adjustments have been managed competently & subtly to result in slightly less top end roll off without sounding artificial or robbing or thinning out the lovely raw lower registers of Dionne's voice. All up, if you want a competently mastered collection of Dionne's 1960's classics on one CD, this one is as good as any & better than most.

I always check the reviews first and they didn't let me down on this occasion. Re- mastering clearly worked well but what I particularly loved was that Dionne Warwick's voice mellowed and enrichened over the years and you can hear the differences on this CD as it dips in and out of the decades. Also the great Bacharach songs are there - and how challenging are they to sing well! This is a timeless production for everyone's collection.
