4.0 out of 5 stars Good Album, but some songs are not up to the best ones, 11 Sep 2009

I like tapes'n tapes, I knew them through spotify and 'Conquest' was the first song i listened and fell in love with. I downloaded the album and gave it a few plays and then decided to buy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars But a short walk from Harvard Square ..., 9 Jan 2009
By Gannon (Manchester, England) - See all my reviews
There is a reason that these fellows are Pitchfork darlings and it is due to their entirely alternative, jittery and literate line of indie classics. As the other review mentions, on a first listen, this album seems to pale in comparison to 2006's excellent Americana-laced, lo-fi and skittish indie masterpiece The Loon. However, repeated listens allow a carefully crafted album of similar material to develop, and the catchier numbers such as 'Conquest and 'Le Ruse' cement themselves as heavy rotators for singing along to absent mindedly.

What it does lack is one killer tune, such as the Harvard Square name-checking 'Insistor' from The Loon, and may be a touch too long so pay due hommage to the adage of leaving the listener wanting more, but as an ensemble it sure hits the mark, and makes for an album as compelling as that debut. File under chin-stroking and knowing-glances.

5.0 out of 5 stars Walk in the park., 13 Nov 2008
By James Baker "J Baker, False Pretences" (Weymouth, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
On first listen this follow-up to 2006's Americana-drenched midnight classic, 'The Loon', the songs rather pass you by, except pumping lead off single 'Hang them all'. For me, a sign of an exciting album, as after several listens you become hooked by the evolved songwriting of Josh Grier, and songs like the brilliant 'Conquest and 'Le Ruse' jump out at you.

Its a real step-up from their lo-fi debut, and a bolder and more widescreen effort, but still has the ragged charm of ace tunes ala 'Omaha', 'Manitoba' and 'The Illiad'. 'Say back something' and my favourite, 'Time of Songs' are T 'n T at their melodic best.

As compelling as their debut, with the best closing track of the noughties in 'The Dirty Dirty'. Essential listening.
