Being a keen walker and not having visited Madeira before this book seemed like the perfect guide and for the most part it does deliver, providing detailed descriptions of a good variety of fantastic walks. There are however a few points potential buyers should be aware of:

1. The level of detail provided can vary a lot, at one moment lulling you in to a false sense of security with a detailed step by step guide to the simplest section of path the next providing only sparse description of a length and complex section of the route.

2. Some directions are vague / poorly worded telling you to go 'up' the road towards the factory (when no factory is in sight) rather than simply stating turn left or turn right.

3. While the descriptions on finding start points of walks are generally very good, the same attention to detail is not always present at the end where you can easily find yourself alone in the middle of nowhere with a suggestion that you could catch a bus.

4. Always read the entire description of a route before setting off (obvious I know), on one or two occasions I found myself several pages (and miles) into a walk to read 'long sleeves and trousers are a must for the next section of this walk' only to find myself in shorts and faced with miles of sharp overgrown foliage. It would have been nice to read this at the start.

Overall this is a good book, and provides an opportunity to experience the wonderful scenery of Madeira on foot and is well worth buying.

This excellent walking guide ticks all the boxes. I've got quite a shelf of Discovery Walking Guides publications now and can honestly say I've been pleased with them all.

Even though I have an earlier edition of this title, I got this new one because it includes important updates following the 2010 floods that affected quite a few levadas and walking trails, then the forest fires that swept across the island's mountains. Another bonus is that the island authorities have been naming and marking 'official' routes in the past couple of years and this edition of Walk! Madeira has that info too.

I recommend this guide to any one, beginner or expert, wanting to discover Madeira on foot. If you add in the Tour & Trail Madeira Tour & Trail Map 6th edition Super-Durable version (Tour & Trail Maps)walking map (same publisher)you've got your holiday made.

I used this guide (and another)on a walking week (14-21 January 2012)on the island of Madeira.I found it easy to pop into my pocket or rucksack side pocket and used it with the map which is similar in size.

Good bits:
Huge local knowledge
Easy to use, good narrative, symbols and grading spot on!
Additional info and GPS very helpful, safety was always emphasised
Up to date (post fire and flood disasters 2010)

Not so good bits:
map separate and expensive, could do with a pull-out one in guide
Photos too small, less pics bigger format
Official walks could have a separate section as they should be first to be used by new walkers to the island
