Being a keen walker and not having visited Madeira before this book seemed like the perfect guide and for the most part it does deliver, providing detailed descriptions of a good variety of fantastic walks. There are however a few points potential buyers should be aware of:
1. The level of detail provided can vary a lot, at one moment lulling you in to a false sense of security with a detailed step by step guide to the simplest section of path the next providing only sparse description of a length and complex section of the route.
2. Some directions are vague / poorly worded telling you to go 'up' the road towards the factory (when no factory is in sight) rather than simply stating turn left or turn right.
3. While the descriptions on finding start points of walks are generally very good, the same attention to detail is not always present at the end where you can easily find yourself alone in the middle of nowhere with a suggestion that you could catch a bus.
4. Always read the entire description of a route before setting off (obvious I know), on one or two occasions I found myself several pages (and miles) into a walk to read 'long sleeves and trousers are a must for the next section of this walk' only to find myself in shorts and faced with miles of sharp overgrown foliage. It would have been nice to read this at the start.
Overall this is a good book, and provides an opportunity to experience the wonderful scenery of Madeira on foot and is well worth buying.
