Walk Madeira by Shirley and Mike Whitehead 2nd edn 2009,

I've holidayed for 11 years in Madeira, principally being drawn by the superb walking there.This new edition is superb and hugely expanded and greatly enhanced this year's holiday. Seasoned walkers there all know the classic Underwood guide, but the great achievement of this work is that there are no less than 13 new routes that such walkers wouldn't have ever seen described. The leaflets for the official PR walks have next to no description and even worse maps and it is wonderful to see Shirley's excellent treatment of these. She has tranformed those walks and I thoroughly enjoyed them. Even if you don't have GPS, comments are often expressly by reference to waypoints and a thin line points exactly to the relevant point on the map. The photos are marvellous, the mapping is top rate and the narrative is packed with useful background information. An absolute must for any walker on the island.

A comprehensive guide,

I had already enjoyed reading Shirley's first book Madeira Walks when I read her new one. This recent publication adds a great deal and will be a precious guide to those who want to discover the beauty of this island, which is so full of contrasts.
I have had the pleasure of accompanying Shirley and her dog Lucy on many walks when I have been staying in Madeira and we have enjoyed marvelous adventures together. In her new book I found all her passion and knowledge plus Mike's skill and technical contribution; this is a comprehensive guide that will lead you to both the most and the least well-known places on the island with great competence and in complete safety. This is an opportunity that should not be missed.
