Reviews

Somewhere between pitch-perfect parodies from Christopher Guest and Co. (such as THIS IS SPINAL TAP and A MIGHTY WIND) and slapstick spoofs (such as AIRPLANE and NAKED GUN) resides the farcical biopic WALK HARD - THE DEWEY COX STORY. Taking the critically lauded Johnny Cash biopic WALK THE LINE as its most obvious inspiration, WALK HARD plows its way through every rock star cliche--from drug use and rampant sex to artistic self-indulgence and spiritual redemption--laying waste to all of them with unremitting blasts of brilliantly lowbrow comedy. Written by Judd Apatow and starring Jon C. Reilly in the title role, WALK HARD is a deliciously basic synthesis of any number of ponderous biographical narratives with the poetic raunchiness of Apatow films, such as SUPERBAD and KNOCKED UP, and the most lovably inane aspects of Reilly's role as Cal Naughton Jr. in TALLEDEGA NIGHTS. In fact, fans will have a blast spotting the endless array of cameos by the gifted comic actors who pepper all of those films, including Jonah Hill, Kristin Wiig, Ed Helms, and Jack McBrayer, among many others. Although Reilly (whose comedic chops are on par with his skills as a dramatic player) is hilarious as the hapless rock n' roll icon Cox, and Jenna Fischer is utterly charming and slyly multifaceted as Darlene Madison (June to Dewey's Johnny), it's the ensemble cast that makes the film so much fun.

1.0 out of 5 stars Amazing film, Horrible DVD 19 May 2008
Format:DVD
This is one of the best films i have seen in a long time, it is a very funny and detailed parody of rock and roll genre. The film was great, i knew i wanted it on DVD, however on watching it through for the first time i found myself completely disappointed with the DVD. In the transition from cinema to DVD huge amounts of scenes and jokes have been cut or completely removed. As someone who had seen this film before, i felt like i only got 75% of it on DVD. I can only imagine this film was butchered in some quest for a low rating. My advice is don't buy this, wait for a full version.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best film of 2007 7 Jan 2009
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have a monthly ticket to cinema so seeing an extra film doesn't cost me a penny so I see A LOT of films.
"Walk Hard" was one of the best films I saw in 2007. I went there just to kill the time, frankly speaking, but by the time The Beatles were dropping acid with Dewy Cox and Sergeant Pepper style cartoon and everything in this film...I sat with my mouth open couldn't believe what was happening. I MUST HAVE treat for all who is into rock, pop, country, blues and all sort of 50th-70th music. Knowing that Bryan Wilson spent two years in bed while being depressed helps as well. Also I watched 17 years old ones leaving the cinema but there is no cure for ignorance. For me, the film was absolutely fabulous.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good spoof of music biopics 12 July 2010
By haunted TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
"Walk Hard" is an excellent parody of musical biopics and in
particular "Walk The Line".

Made by the team that gave us Knocked Up and Superbad fun is poked at
showbiz biopic standards like a hectic love life, multiple forms of
substance abuse, numerous offspring and a glorious late-career
comeback. The laughs come thick and fast. Some of the jokes are a bit
lame but not to worry as another one is just around the corner. The
constant stream of gags is reminiscent of the "Airplane" and "Naked
Gun" movies. In a rare lead role John C Reilly is perfect as the clueless Dewey. Familiar
faces such as Jenna Fischer and Kirsten Wiig appear and there are
cameos from Frankie Muniz and Harold Ramis among many others.

A perfect film with guaranteed laughs when you feel like a night in
with a DVD.
