Product Description

Product Description

This pocket-sized full-colour guide is designed for short-break holidays around Stockholm and its archipelago with a gastronomic touch. Almost all the walks are easy grade, but the book is worth having just for the restaurant suggestions, the excursions and the information about local food. The book describes four excursions (including boat trips and a heritage railway), plus 11 easy to moderate walks, all illustrated with 1:35,000 topographical maps. Each excursion or walk recommends at least one restaurant en route serving local cuisine, with photograph, price guide, opening times, sample menus, and recipes for some of their specialities.Other sections include: planning your trip, getting about, food shopping (including health foods and local markets), glossary of food terms and restaurant mini-vocabulary. A special feature is the emphasis on natural local foods suitable for those with food intolerances. All recipes have been made by the authors and are known to 'work'. On-line updates keep readers abreast of any route or restaurant changes. Sunflower have led the field for years with their brilliant Landscapes walking and car touring guides. Now, they have raised their game even higher with a superb new "Walk & Eat series" - Frank Barrett, "Mail on Sunday".

5.0 out of 5 stars The ONLY Stockholm guide you need - whether you're a trekker or not, 11 July 2008
This review is from: Walk and Eat Stockholm (Walk and Eat) (Paperback)
As an Expat living in Stockholm I simply highly recommend this book to anyone considering a walking break - or an 'ordinary' break or holiday - in this beautiful city. This should be your pocket-guide Bible if you are considering a walking break in the Stockholm region. At 144 pages - it is jam-packed with relevant information, advice, history, cultural insights, recipes, trivia, maps, photographs, contact information and easy-to-say Swedish phrases - all of which is equally useful for those who have no intention whatsoever of doing any trekking in, or around, the city. The guide is also especially appealing to the tastes of the 'ordinary' tourist - you don't have to be 'high-brow' to appreciate the delights recommended within. The selected walks really do highlight some of the most spectacular and pleasant parts of the city. Stockholm is not renowned on the global scale for its food or restaurants - and it has always baffled me why this is the case. Swedes are extremely serious about their food and this guide recommends some great affordable eateries (although I must confess there are many mentioned that I have not visited) as well as some fantastic traditional recipes you can try at home. I've bought many guide books on Stockholm over the years for obvious reasons - and did not know about this one until it was recently recommended to me by a friend. What makes this guide different for me is the user-friendly easy-to-understand language and instructions, how the guide is structured, and the thorough research involved - it is clear that the author has completed all of the walks himself and not just 'lifted' the information from other available tourist literature. For example a seemingly simple little tip such as pointing out where the nearest cash machine is on a particular walk - really useful if your caught dead thirsty at the start of a walk with no cash in your wallet for example. This realism shines through. A lot of guides are 'all over the place' in their approach - but the flow of this one is excellent. A great sign for me when reading this guide was when questions arose in my head - they were answered within a couple of paragraphs. The author obviously has an intimate knowledge of this city and has not just flown in and out again for the purposes of researching the guide. This is clear in the 'honesty' of the guide - and not just about the expense of the city. While other guides I've bought paint almost everything as rosy - this one has not shied away from mentioning those things about the Swedes and Swedish culture/lifestyle that non-Swedes may find odd or baffling. So it is certainly not sycophantic. Such information will be really useful to know in advance - and will save a lot of head scratching when you experience such things for yourself. As a regular buyer on Amazon I know that I would appreciate a tip to buy this guide - so hopefully others can benefit from my recommendation. Put simply - if you intend visiting Stockholm for a break - walking or otherwise - I believe this is the guide you should have. I learned a lot from it - and I live in the city!

3.0 out of 5 stars Seeing Stockholm, 23 July 2009
By
Sandra (West Midlands) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Walk and Eat Stockholm (Walk and Eat) (Paperback)
This book was good for ideas of walks, but light on recommendations for places to eat, it concentrates mostly on recipes for eating. Instructions on walk were not always specific, and more descriptions of buildings and landmarks would have been welcome.
