5.0 out of 5 stars I've used this book to teach vocabulary for many years 5 Nov 2010
By Thomas E. Davis - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
As an ESL intructor with more than 25 years of teaching experience, I've found this text works exceedingly well for college-bound students who need to expand and fill gaps in their vocabularies. It divides common, useful vocabulary into "domains" that include words related to such topics as walking, talking, speed, happiness, sadness, buildings, size, frequency, change, temperature, weather, disasters, teaching, learning, love, hate, age, and stages of life. Each chapter is interesting and well-illustrated, introducing the words of a domain in related groups on a continuum, then presenting them in several contextual exercises, then using them in a reading passage, and finally extending the domain with collocations, alternative word forms, and discussion or writing questions. There is also a more basic volume in this series, level 1, for students of a lower proficiency.
