Product Description

The walimex 500/8.0 Tele Mirror Lens has a focal length of 500mm and a good luminosity of 1:8.0. The sturdy metal housing and high quality workmanship and mechanics ensure good reproduction quality. With a very short minimum focusing distance of only 1.7 metres, the lens enables very good magnification. The focusing is manual. The lens can be used with an automatic timer or manual exposure settings. Thanks to the easy handling, the lens is suited for beginners. If the exposure leeway of the digital camera is exceeded, you can use the enclosed grey filters to reduce the light. The image scale refers to the size relationship between the image and the object. A scale of 1:3 means that the object is 3 times as large as the picture.

Hard to review this item. Being a mirror lens, it is lightweight. But this means there is no aperture setting... as there is no aperture. light input is controlled by two things: The camera ISO setting, and the shutter speed. As it is a telephoto, fixed at 500, a tripod is a must! Even then, if there is a breeze, the tripod may need weighing down to cut down on camera movement.

I found that out taking snaps of the moon. Alas, not a good night... very windy, and some atmospheric haze around the moon.

Be aware that focusing is critical. Depth of field is tiny, and using the LCD panel to focus is not a good idea.... use the viewfinder.

But I can't argue with the price. And I look forward to some hot bright sunny days, when i can take lens, camera, and tripod to a local nature reserve, and attempt some shots of the heron that stays out of range of my 200 lens, on the far side of the lake.
