Heidevolk are a pagan folk metal group from Gelderland in the Netherlands. If you already like Turisas, Amon Amarth, Falkenbach and Tyr, then you'll probably like these too. They only sing in Dutch; it's surprisingly nice too, their lyrics have a nice rhythm and stress which goes well with the music, even if you can't understand the lyrics. Their song titles cover Norse and dark Ages mythology, so you get songs about Odin and Valhalla, swords and Saxons. The music grows on you every time you hear it, it's really heavy rock with a violin and occasional folk tunes mixed in. They show their hard rock influences with the song Wodan Heerst which ends with a very nice lead break. It's followed by a medieval styled drinking song, just drums, a penny whistle and vocals. Naar De Hal De Gevallenen is similar, with a guitar instead of the whistle. The last song (Dageraad) is an instrumental on guitar and flute. Most of the CD is good fast heavy rock, You know what you are in for when you play the first song. Saksenland starts with a thunderclap and gets louder. You find yourself humming the words, it's surprisingly catchy stuff and it all has an epic feel. If you thought the Dutch only did beer, tulips and rubbery cheese, Heidevolk show they have a real talent for viking rock music too.
