Waldteufel's waltz The Skaters (Les Patineurs), must surely be one of the most famous waltzes ever written, and one of the finest, with it's beautiful, tranquil horn opening and distinctive waltz melody. Waldteufel was a prolific composer, but only really seems to be known for this one work, which is a pity, as this fine collection of waltzes displays a considerable talent. VERY PRETTY, POMONA, SOLITUDE, THE SIRENS, GOLDEN RAIN and MY DREAM, are all fine examples of the waltz composers art. Waldteufel's waltzes are beautifully crafted, with nicely developed melodies and musical themes. The Slovak State Philarmonic Orchestra, has a sure touch with this repertoir. Waldteufel was also a prolific arranger, and there are a couple of examples on this CD, the most famous being a fine waltz arrangement of Chabrier's Espana. Apart from The skaters, I don't think I'd heard any of the waltzes on this CD. I can't see any lover of waltzes being disappointed with this fine selection.
