Book Description

13 Feb 2003 Battleground Europe
This latest addition to the successful Second World War Battleground Europe Series describes the fierce campaign, codenamed INFATUATE, mounted in November 1944 to clear the way through to the port of Antwerp. This was a vital task as the Allies lacked sufficient port facilities to provide for the increasing quantities of war supplies required as the advance eastwards took them closer to Germany. There was a danger of lines of communication becoming over-extended. A leading role was played by British Royal Marine commandos but all who took part in both D Day and this landing regarded the former as a picnic! As the book vividly describes, the Germans fought with extraordinary courage against overwhelming odds and refused to surrender although all must have known defeat was inevitable. The winter weather was another major problem and the terrain was extremely difficult.

Not being an impartial reviewer in this case (I proofread the manuscript and am the source of a lot of photographs), I'd nevertheless like to make a few comments about this work. Although not painting the story in the smallest detail (not fitting within the scope of the work), Mr Rawson has a pleasant way of telling things and knows how to give the right examples to create the right atmosphere. Being the first guide of this battlefield, I can only recommend it. Trying, however, to show some degree of impartiality, I must mention some minor points of criticism on the work:
- The choice of illustrations gives an excellent overview of the battle, though several pictures are not taken at Walcheren at all and used here as example photos without being mentioned as such. And the overall photo quality is not excellent, due to having used mostly reproductions.
- The cover, showing artwork of a Duplex Drive tank, that was not used during the Walcheren landings, remains a mystery to me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exellent but not the full story 1 April 2005
This is an excellent book, well writen in a good narrative style.
My main concern is that it only tells part of the story of the battle for Walcheren Island. It completely neglects the actions of the Canadians and 52nd Lowland Division on the east of the island to capture the Walcheren Causeway and eventually cross the Sloe Channel (Op Mallard). These actions were a vital part of the plan to capture Walcheren Island. The valiant attack on the Walcheren Causeway initiated by the Canadians on 31st October and carried on by 52nd Lowland Division through the next few days undoubteldy contributed to the success of Operation Infatuates I & II in that these action served to fix a large number of German forces at the east of the island away from the risky aphibious assaults to the south and west.
Despite this glaring omission the book is well worthwhile purchasing especially for the very good section on touring Walcheren which is a must for anyone trying to understand the complexities of the Flushing battles.
A very good book which could be better if it told the complete story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Family History 10 Mar 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
My father fought on Walcheren as a Royal Marine Commando in 1944.
I have not found a better book on the battle there for the taking of the garrison which caused so much trouble for the Allied Forces by shelling the port of Antwerp. This is a part of my family history a part of which I am proud. My father loved this book and sadly now no longer with us, having passed away, it is a link with him and the past.
Buy it you won't be disappointed, it is very readable and full of good illustrations

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Book - Shame about the cover 5 Aug 2011
By Brucey
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As Mr Houterman says in his review, it's a shame that the book's cover shows a Duplex Drive tank coming ashore - they were not used in the landings.

The RAF Air Battle Staff Course makes regular visits to Walcheren because Op INFATUATE is used as a case study on the use of Air Power in Joint operations. I have therefore been to Walcheren a number of times. Despite this, the book told me many facts I had not previously known and I now have a deeper insight into the operation to retake Walcheren.
