Product Description

They are masters of seduction, London's greatest lovers . . .

Renowned for his bedchamber prowess, Ransom Seymour, the Duke of Ainsley, owes a debt to a friend. But the payment expected is most shocking, even to an unrepentant rake--for he's being asked to provide his friend's exquisite wife with what she most dearly covets: a child.

Living for pleasure, they will give their hearts to no one . . .

Lady Jayne Seymour, Marchioness of Walfort, is furious that such a scandalous agreement would be made. If she acquiesces, there must be rules: no kissing . . . and, certainly, no pleasure.

Until love takes them by surprise.

But unexpected things occur with the surprisingly tender duke--especially once Lady Jayne discovers the rogue can make her dream again . . . and Ransom realizes he's found the one woman he truly cannot live without.

After I hated 'In Bed with the Devil' by Lorraine Heath I swore never to read another of her historicals but because I'd read rave reviews on Amazon.com and by someone who compared her to one of my favourite authors, Loretta Chase, I thought I'd give this author another chance. Big mistake. The plot premise was the most utter nonsense and totally out of period, the characters were non dimensional and I couldn't have cared less about any of them. Plot summary with spoilers: Heroine's husband is crippled and incapable after accident, husband asks his best friend the Duke (as you do) to make love with his wife and get her pregnant. She can't stand said Duke because she blames him for husband's accident. For some strange reason she then agrees and they have a whole month (between her menses natch) in a secluded cottage together to do the deed. Oh and BTW we are supposed to believe that the h can spend a whole month living with the H with impunity in the society of those times with the excuse that she is there 'on holiday'. Strangely enough Duke turns out to be noble, sensitive, good in bed and totally wonderful and has secretly always loved her. Stranger still she falls for him. She does fall pregnant and guess what, husband conveniently wastes away in time for Duke and H to marry before baby is born.

I never read the other books in the series prior to this one so perhaps there was a good reason for the youngest of three sons to be the Duke but I don't care enough to check - still that sentence threw me out of the story right at the outset. Then there were some really crass lines like "she erased the evidence of her tears with such delicacy" and his comment after one of their love making sessions "you seemed to enjoy things." After he asks her if she will weep tonight when he leaves she comes out with "I don't think so. I'm too sated." Errrrr - eloquent, moving, sensitive, emotional? There is some sub plot about a romance between the hero's mother and a younger man that was not very interesting. All in all it was for me a complete waste of time. Just before reading this book I had read two other new recent releases - Meredith Duran's "A Lady's Lesson in Scandal" which is totally brilliant and and Loretta Chase's new one "Silk is for Seduction" also brilliant and both way better written than this book. Both of these books have plots which are perhaps a little far fetched but they become completely involving because they are so beautifully written and you get that emotional wrenching feeling that I for one am looking for when I read a historical romance. This book is not worth your time in my view. Try Meredith Duran or Loretta Chase instead.

What would you do? 9 Dec 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Really, what would you do if you wanted a child so badly and lived with a crippled husband? Would you sleep with another man to have that child?

When Jayne's husband and his cousin have a carriage accident, the results are three-fold: Walfort himself is left a wheelchair bound cripple who has lost the use of his lower body; Ainsley, the cousin, is riddled with guilt because the story has it that he was driving the carriage after too much drink; Jayne, upon hearing of the accident, loses the unborn child she was carrying.

Three years later a crippled Walfort wants to provide his wife with the child she was denied and so desperately longs for. He plays upon the guilt of Ainsley when he proposes that his cousin impregnate Jayne. Ainsley balks but eventually gives in because he harbors feelings for Jayne and realizes that this may be the only way he can legitimately have her to himself, even if only for a month. Jayne is at first appalled at the idea for two reasons: she loves her husband and secondly hates Ainsley for having caused the accident that crippled her husband.

Eventually Jayne gives in, travels to Ainsley's well-staffed retreat, and makes the most of what she deems is an unsavory situation. Despite her proclamations of hating Ainsley she finds herself attracted to him and hates parting from him at the end of their sojourn. She finds herself pregnant shortly thereafter.

At this point of the story, I wondered how Ainsley was going to claim his child. I expected there to be an exciting sense of conflict for the characters. But being as shallow as they were, I found the ending to be contrived: Walfort takes sick, his 'other' family shows up (Jayne knew nothing of them although Ainsley did), Walfort succumbs, and Jayne and Ainsley marry.

The premise of the story was full of promise and hope for this love triangle. But in my opinion falls short of the mark. The best characters were Ainsley's mother who is not a stranger to scandal and her current lover, Leo. They at least brought some humor to this angst-ridden story.

I wasn't sure how this story was going to progress - after all the prospect of a romance developing where the heroine is already married to the friend and cousin of the hero seemed rather bleak... as it was it was a truly beautiful story. I would absolutely spoil it if I said any more about the twists and turns of the plot so I hope that you will trust me and not miss out on an incredible ending to the London's Greatest Lovers series.
