Product Description

Still grieving the death of their only child, Alice, a young couple relocate to the remote town of Wake Wood where they stumble on a group of villagers practising Pagan rituals. They soon learn that this ritual has the power to bring back the dead, and would allow them three dats with their beloved daughter.

They agree terms with the village leader (Timothy Spall) but then far bigger questions loom... what will they do when it's time for Alice to go back? Will she go back peacefully? Or are there more sinister forces at work?

Despite the cover of the DVD showing the Hammer logo, Wake Wood is only presented by Hammer, but not officially a Hammer movie. Exclusive Films were involved, but if you watch any of the credits, Hammer Films are not actually listed. Despite this, the film itself is very good, if a little slow in places. But the blood and gore scenes are full on, right from the outset with the dog attack - very bloody and very well done. The film has elements of Pet Sematary (bringing the dead back to life), but has it's own take on the practice, with, again, some quite gruesome scenes for the resurrections, and the creepy locals of Wake Wood, with their terrible secrets and practices, help create a disturbing atmosphere to the whole proceedings. And be prepared - the ending is genuinely horrific. The only shame about Wake Wood is that it wasn't given more of a cinematic release - it was released in one cinema in London and one cinema in Ireland, despite a reasonably good review in The Sunday Times. In my humble opinion, the fact that it is only presented by Hammer makes it more of a curio, rather than a necessity, for Hammer Film afficianados. But it is still a good film - maybe not worth 5 stars, but definitely worth 4.

Hammer is back!! 25 Mar 2011
Wake Wood is a genuinely creepy horror film that leaves you feeling more than a little bit unsettled after it is over. Filmed in suitably eerie locations in Ireland it is one of the most atmospheric films I have seen in a very long time. There are those who have compared it to films such as Don't Look Now, The Wicker Man and Pet Sematary, but Wake Wood easily establishes its very own niche in the horror genre. The mostly Irish cast is quite good but English actor Timothy Spall is truly creepy as the town elder "Arthur". Young Irish actress Ella Connolly is also superb as the young daughter "Alice". It is one of the spookiest films I have seen in years and is a most welcome change after years of slasher films and the more recent extremes of films such as Hostel and Saw. Yes, there is some pretty graphic violence in Wake Wood but what will stay with you after you see it is not so much what you see but the sense of uneasiness the film will leave you with. The ending will also leave you shaking your head. Welcome back Hammer.

On the basis of this new Hammer effort I would say Hammer is definitely heading in the right direction. It's certainly far better than the dull US effort, The Resident. They definitely got the cast right, and in particular Timothy Spall - if they want to use him as much as Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee I won't be complaining.

I did want to like Wake Wood more than I did. This is a solid effort, but by no means a classic horror or in fact classic Hammer film. The isolated, rain-swept and muddy wooded setting was atmospheric and helped build suspense nicely. This strong set-up was lost a little in a stock horror finale, that didn't pack as much punch as I would have liked.

I hope that these new British-set Hammer horrors do find an audience and lead to more productions. I'll be keen to see what they do next. At a stretch I would give this 3.5 stars.

Pet Semetery in Ireland.
I watched this film a few weeks ago and I found it to be an above average horror film. There were some nice views of the Irish countryside which added to the nice atmosphere. Read more

Better 2nd time around.
I remember the first time that I watched this, being a little bit disappointed. The reviews in the press, at the time, compared it to The Wickerman. So maybe it had too much hype. Read more

I didn't really like Pet Sematary (from memory) this is the same premise reheated with inferior ingredients. I spent the first 20 minutes dumbfunded at the poor execution. Read more
