5.0 out of 5 stars One of Australia's strongest acts 10 Mar 2012
Format:Audio CD
The Drones are one of the most interesting contempory bands from Australia, with a unique atmospheric sound creating iconic Austalian songs much in the same way as the Go Betweens and The Triffids. Wait long by the River is probably my favorite album of theirs and I am very happy when it is lined up to play in my ipod. Best of all it contains the classic "Shark Fin Blues". Although they might be an acquired taste some persistance pays handsome rewards.

Dont confuse this crap with the original band called "The Drones" from the english punk movement in 1977..The original drones should sue this lot for useing there name..

Listen to the Further temptations album to hear the original Drones.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Drones Have Delivered An Instant Classic Of An Album 9 Nov 2006
By Dean J. Whitby - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Whilst being the antithesis of easy listening, this challenging album is an intensely rewarding, even cathartic experience. The Drones music is raw, raucous, at times brutal, at times surprisingly bittersweet, but always delivered with passion and real feeling. To give you an idea of their sound, imagine the lacerating twin guitar attack of MC5, Neil Young and Crazy Horse or The Beasts of Bourbon, with the art rock edge of Sonic Youth thrown in. But The Drones are much more than the sum of their infuences; their music takes the listener on journey into the heart of darkness, through a soundscape as stark and desolate as the Australian outback. It's the perfect antidote to Celine Dion! Hear it and be amazed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Binge drinking from a nasty strain of something....... 22 Aug 2006
By Mark Lomas - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is to me the sound of the wide blue yonder, of the horizon stretching on forever, of white line fever of finally arriving somewhere and finding out it's worse than where you just left. This CD is not one you will play every day (eventually). It is however one which will probably always scare/provoke or affect you in some way. Even if only to hope that Gareth Liddiard and Co haven't actually lived these songs. Like watching a comet go overhead, get a glimpse now before they burn out. Perhaps one of the few truly original lyric writers left out there. Buy.
5.0 out of 5 stars it doesn't get much better than this 8 May 2007
By Furry Man of the Midwest - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is one of my favorite records and I would recommend it as an introduction to the Drones. If you are a fan of Neil Young, The Birthday Party, Beasts of Bourbon, The Pogues, The Scientists, Bob Dylan, et al., this band is for you.

Vocalist/guitarist Gareth Liddiard is one the most provocative lyricists/songwriters of our time. Some people might have trouble getting past his idiosynchratic phrasing and nasally voice, but if something familiar is what one is after, there are droves of clichéd pop stars out there who are banking on the opportunity to provide that sort of comfort, so have at it.
4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the listen 5 Mar 2007
By Aussie Petty Fan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The Drones really make an impression on this disc. I love their sound, rock/grunge but with an artsy feel. "Shark Fin Blues" is a killer track to open this album. One of the best records I've listened to for a long time from bands of this genre. Give it a listen.
