Product Description

This is a wonderful new saga by the author of "Too Close to the Sun - The New Josephine Cox". Lydia Halley longs to leave home. At twenty-one and working in the local button factory, her life seems empty and unfulfilled. After the tragedy of her mother's death, she decides to take up a position in a city many miles from home. Her father laments her departure but for Lydia it is the freedom she has yearned for. Taking up lodgings her new life begins. It was in the beautiful city gardens that she first met Guy Anderson but thought no more about the handsome stranger. Until she chances upon him once more. And so begins a friendship which blossoms into love, until one day a telegram from Italy tells of Guy's father's terrible accident and the need for his presence. And their passionate leave-taking has dramatic consequences for them both. Jess Foley was born in Wiltshire but moved to London to study at the Chelsea School of Art, and then worked for several years as a painter and actor before writing "So Long at the Fair". This was followed by "Too Close to the Sun". Jess lives in Blackheath, southeast London. "Wait for the Dawn" is Jess Foley's fourth novel.

Masterpiece 17 July 2008
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book tells the story of a family dominated by a dictator of a father. Lydia Halley is very much the apple of her fathers eye, whereas her sister Amaryllis can do no right by him. On a rare leave of absence from work, Amaryllis accidently breaks an ornament, which sends her father into a rage, the only problem is that it is her mother who is at the wrong end of his wrath, and tragically dies as a consequence, and so the story unfolds.
Both sisters try to build 'new' lives for themselves, Amaryllis goes back into service, whilst Lydia goes to work in a department store. Both ladies jounrneys are plagued with disasterous love affairs, tragic events and many obstacles to overcome....

This is a truly enchanting book, it is well thought out, well written and completly believable (which is a rare characteristic of books these days) A real credit to the author, Jess Foley.

A gripping story 5 Jun 2010
By Surtop
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I was totally gripped by this story. The characters are believable and are easy to identify with. It was a realistic story of the lives of two sisters and the fate which befell them. It is well-researched and highlights the difficulties endured by women who, at that time, were treated at times by their menfolk as little more than troublesome possessions.
The stratification of society comes across very clearly and the spiteful treatment of one of the sisters was abysmal but considered justified at the time to ensure people 'knew their place in society'.
This novel evoked in me feelings of anger, outrage, tenderness, joy, trepidation, sadness and happiness.
I would read it again but because I lent it to a friend to read on holiday, who lent it to a friend, who lent it to a friend etc., all that came back to me was an apology and the cover with a collection of well-thumbed loose pages.
The consolation was that I know that its tatty condition was a sign that the book had been really enjoyed.
