Ahhhhh the Lakes!,

This review is from: Wainwright: The Biography (Paperback)
What a marvellous insight into the mysterious world of the real Alfred Wainwright. This book is well written and allows you to make up your own mind as to whether he was a recluse or just a very passionate man.
I did not agree with some of his ways but love what he did for the Lake District. This book is is addictive and thorough

Didn't get under the skin,

This review is from: Wainwright: The Biography (Paperback)
Although fascinated by the subject and glued to the book from start to finish, I felt unsatisfied having read it. Davies never really gets under the skin of Wainwright - admittedly a very difficult task - and I was left feeling that although I knew a few more facts about him, I didn't really know the man. Maybe no-one did (except perhaps Betty) but if you don't get that across in a biography then to me it's a wasted effort. As an example, Davies quotes at length, verbatim from dozens of letters that AW wrote to various people, but never gives us his opinion on the insights they contain, never analysing them, pointing out the context, the motive or the inherent inconsistencies. He talks to AW's friends and acquaintances (some of them) and reports conversations verbatim, but with the same lack of comment or insight. He makes no connections between all the information he presents, and so fails to weave the tapestry.
On the plus side, it is well-researched, and contains lots of first-hand information about AW. Plus it's a good read, despite Davies's irritating "blokey" writing style.
