5.0 out of 5 stars Astonishing! 29 Jan 2011
By Adrian Drew TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
Oh, if only we could have "concept" productions like this in the UK, rather than the tired old nonsense we often have to endure at the ENO and Garden. This "taster" dvd is superb. Although some aspects of the production may bemuse (eg Brunhilda's breast plate !) with the exception of such minor caveat, the overall experience is absolutely wonderful. There is a true sense of epic theatre - the designs are breathtaking - the singing as good as can be desired. And if you observe carefully, absolutely every detail is totally appropriate to Wagner's requirements, albeit with a modernist twist.
Just see how the designer envisages the building of Valhalla - and makes clear the human implications and the issues of social order, so implicit in Wagner's text. Yes it's all there and delivered with sophistication and total theatrical bravura.
The blu ray is of course splendid and both sound an image of demonstration class.
Don't miss this magnificent production. Event if you don't like it, you cannot question its theatrical power...
Oh dear... I seem to have raved on about this in a rather over the top way... but just you wait and see what I mean...

4.0 out of 5 stars RING HIGHLIGHTS 8 May 2011
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
If you, like me, enjoy Wagner's music but haven't got the time to sit through the whole of the Ring cycle in one go, then this is a must buy.
If you have never listened or watched any of the operas that make up Der Ring des Nibelungen this film is as good an introduction as any. Who knows? it may inspire you to explore the rest of what is one of the great works in western music. If you are a beginner I would say ditch out any prejudices about Wagner's thoughts regarding race, religion or politics and just listen.
This video brings the stunning blu ray clarity and sound of these wonderful productions.
I believe the idea of highlights is that you get a picture of the whole in a fraction of the time. This video succeeds in doing this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Demonstration for the Benefits of Blu Ray! 22 Feb 2011
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
The subtitle of this set, is a Ring for the 21st century. It certainly is and this is a great demonstration disc for showing off the Blu Ray format in Opera, with its high quality surround sound and HD images.

It's good that you can get a a cheap introduction to this Ring Cycle, as while I have no doubts that Mehta is a great conductor, I am not aware of the orchestra and the performance space is relatively new. So this is a good chance to sample, without committing yourself to 14 hours and an expensive box set.

This has all sorts of things that make it highly suitable for Blu Ray - great lighting, wonderful 3D Computer Animation, acrobatic performers and a cutting edge opera house.

I must say I loved the whole "experience" , but this may not replace some of the great Rings and performers as the 1st choice - Wagner no doubt would have preferred his beloved Bayreuth. But for sheer technical brilliance, in every way, this performance can't be beaten and it deserves to at least be sampled.

I would highly recommend the extracts - this is a great value disc and gives a wonderful glimpse into the whole - with good subtitles that can be switched off in various languages and a couple of "making of" extras. The Blu Ray transfer is certainly of the highest quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Blu-Ray Sampler 27 Mar 2011
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
Here we have what Wagnerians affectionaly call "bleedin chunks", highlights from all four operas of Wagner's monumental Ring cycle filmed in Valancia, staged by La Fura Dels Baus, with Orchestra de la comunitat Valenciana conducted by world famous conductor Zubin Mehta.

Being familiar with Wagner's Ring since I heard Solti/Culshaw Decca version released on Vinyl during the early 1960s, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. With the available technology, 3D projections, and using acrobats balancing on poles etc, it was far, far from what Wagnerians expect the Ring to be. Many Wagnerians are traditionalists by nature and prefer the original staging and costumes which James Levine's Met version designed by Brian Large achieved in the 1991 version thankfully still available on DVD, although not on Blu-Ray.

Having watched this version right through on a number of occasions, I was pleasantly surprised how good the performances actually are. Moreover, despite my own misgivings about the sets and the costumes, I am prepared to overlook this entirely and judge these highlights on performance alone. From the opening bars of Das Rheingold, to the final scenes in Gotterdammerung, I was totally enthralled and moved by the performances, especially the final bars of Gotterdammerung, wonderfully played throughout.

My only disappointment is that although there are many highlights from Das Rheingold and Die Walkure, there are only three brief scenes from Gotterdammerung which is the best opera of the four. Although in fairness, the final scene from "Mein Erben" does make up for this. Still, it would have been nice to see more scenes from Gotterdammerung.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent blu-ray disc highlights/sampler 1 Dec 2011
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
I have never listened to the Ring being more a Verdi/Puccini type of Opera fan. I have been listening to opera recently that I have previously avoided and decided to try a sampler of the Ring cycle. After reading the reviews I thought this would be a good option. I cannot say how impressed I was with this spectacular production, the costumes, props and staging are just terrific, a breath of fresh air that other opera producers could do with looking at.

The disc quality is superb, really doing both the blu-ray picture and sound justice. The quality of the singing seems to a non Wagnerian such as myself to be extremely good. I have never come across any of the singers before but would certainly look out for them again.

The music.....I'm still not too sure about. I think it will require listening to a couple of more times before I make my mind up if Wagner is for me. However because of the production I cannot see that being a chore but something to look forward to.

I would recommend this disc to anyone already into Wagner and to those like myself, wanting to test the water for the first time.
