The subtitle of this set, is a Ring for the 21st century. It certainly is and this is a great demonstration disc for showing off the Blu Ray format in Opera, with its high quality surround sound and HD images.
It's good that you can get a a cheap introduction to this Ring Cycle, as while I have no doubts that Mehta is a great conductor, I am not aware of the orchestra and the performance space is relatively new. So this is a good chance to sample, without committing yourself to 14 hours and an expensive box set.
This has all sorts of things that make it highly suitable for Blu Ray - great lighting, wonderful 3D Computer Animation, acrobatic performers and a cutting edge opera house.
I must say I loved the whole "experience" , but this may not replace some of the great Rings and performers as the 1st choice - Wagner no doubt would have preferred his beloved Bayreuth. But for sheer technical brilliance, in every way, this performance can't be beaten and it deserves to at least be sampled.
I would highly recommend the extracts - this is a great value disc and gives a wonderful glimpse into the whole - with good subtitles that can be switched off in various languages and a couple of "making of" extras. The Blu Ray transfer is certainly of the highest quality.
