Excellent compilation of some of the great man's best works.
This is a good place to start with Wagner and for those (myself included) that find the operatic vocals an acquired taste, I must really stress that ALL tracks are fully orchestral ONLY! There are no vocal performances on this CD whatsoever - just an approx hour's worth of GREAT music.
There is a negative review on here that is fairly critical of the performance & recording - all I can say is that I don't find this the case at all, and I have other Wagner discs to compare with. It may not be the best recording available but it is a decent, modern sound that is well performed.
My personal favs are the gloriously uplifting Liebestod from Tristan Und Isolde, the rather cinematic Der Fliegende Hollander, the infamous Ride Of The Valkyries and one of my all time favourite pieces, the brooding & epic Siegfried's Funeral March from Gotterdammerung. In truth I do have better versions of Valkyries & Siegfried's Funeral elsewhere (the percussion could be better & I had to turn up Siegfried louder than usual) but as I have said, still more than decent enough especially for a Wagner beginner, and at this price too!
I would recommend Wagner's Ring Without Words, Orchestral only CD that you can find on Amazon if you like this - as performed by the Berlin Philharmonic. Powerful stuff for sure and also free of vocals which can be offputting if not used to them.

Richard Wagner, 1813-1883, German.

"Richard Wagner, a musician who wrote music which is better than it sounds". (Richard Wagner).

This Naxos CD is aimed at the beginner or occasional classical music listener and aims to provide a cross section of the entire works of Wagner on a single CD of around one hour duration. It's difficult of course to achieve a satisfactory representation of a composer's lifetime achievements in such short time, but this CD does achieve its aim in that it offers an affordable introduction to Wagner which may enable the listener to either pursue these works further, or simply to collect the entire Naxos `Best Of' range.

If the intention is to collect the series it will provide a good, although slightly abbreviated, library of classical music. Those requiring further listening are helped by the sleeve notes which give recommended further listening (all Naxos label CD's of course!).

It should be noted that the Naxos 2CD `Very Best Of' releases offer slightly better value than the single CD versions in this `Best Of' series.

That said, this is a good introduction to classical music for those on a careful budget.

The complete Naxos `Best Of' series (those indicated* also have `Very Best Of' releases):

Bach*, Bartok, Beethoven*, Berlioz, Bizet, Brahms, Chopin*, Debussy*, Dvorak*, Elgar*, Faure, Gershwin, Glazunov, Grieg*, Handel*, Haydn, Liszt, Lutoslawski, Mendelsshon, Mozart*, Paganini, Prokofiev, Puccini*, Rachmaninov*, Ravel*, Rimsky-Korsakov, Rossini, Saint-Saens, Schubert, Schumann, Satie*, Shostakovich*, Sibelius*, Strauss (Johann) II*, Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky*, Verdi*, Vivaldi*, Wagner, Weber.

Just discovering Wagner, reasonable selection of his music. Still finding the music of his I like best will add more Wagner when I find out what it is.

I found that to fit in all the music listed at least one track was cut short, not what you would expect.
