I was looking for a copy of Parsifal, and not being familiar with the many performances of Wagner operas available, I alighted on this one as very reasonably priced for a 4 CD set. I was encouraged by its great soloists and conductor but somewhat puzzled by the 2 existing reviews of this set, one giving it 5 stars and one giving it just 1. Anyway, I decided to take the plunge for at this price it seemed worth the gamble.

I am a relative newcomer to Wagner, only recently having become acquainted with his works, but I can honestly say I have been blown away with this recording. The soloists, orchestra and ensemble pieces are all excellent, I find the performance engaging and moving, the CD is well packaged with an excellent booklet with synopsis, a short essay and full libretto. I thoroughly enjoyed it at first listening and haven't been able to leave it alone since.

A word about the stage nosies referred to by another reviewer. I had expected to find them offputting but in fact they had the opposite effect on me. I found that they added to that sense of being there at a great live performance, enhancing my imaging of the drama. True, if you don't like stage noises, there are quite a lot of them and so you'd be better going for a studio version, but I for one, found them to be no problem at all.

All in all I think this is an excellent recording and superb value. If you love Wagner, or if like me you are a beginner, buy this now.

. . . I found it a moving, and in parts exciting, account of Wagner¿s astonishing swan-song . . . The playing of the orchestra -- essentially, of course, the Vienna Philharmonic -- is glorious here as it is throughout, with the trademark tangy oboe and the glowing strings . . . And there is no underlining, no bombast. When the curtain rises we hear the young Gurnemanz of Franz-Josef Selig, who gives a decent but not a penetrating reading of the marvellous role . . . The Knights, Squires and so on are all well cast. Quite the finest vocal performance, however, comes from Falk Struckmann as Amfortas. He is in rich voice . . . and he has a deep understanding of the role, without ever overdoing it. Enter Parsifal himself, the `opera icon¿ Domingo . . . is well delivered and reasonably youthful sounding . . . this performance succeeds in being in his tradition of interpretation to a degree I had not thought possible.

Michael Tanner, International Record Review (London) / 01. June 2006

Plácido Domingo and Waltraud Meier . . . are excellent. Domingo belying his years with an ardent yet introspective account, while Meier does not disappoint. Franz-Josef Selig and Falk Struckmann also make powerful contributions in the key roles of Gurnemanz and Amfortas. But what makes the set even more special is Thielemann's ability to integrate the strength and solemnity of traditional interpretations with the more modern tempi pioneered by Boulez. It's a tremendous achievement.

Barry Millington, Evening Standard (London) / 12. May 2006

Firstly, this set sounds very good indeed. It is true the stage noises are louder than is usual for a recording but I wasn't distracted by this (except listening to it while driving once and thinking my engine was making a strange noise!).

Secondly, it is an enthralling performance that engages one from the opening bars and leaves you blissfully satisfied at the end. The singers are very strong. I don't know other performances of this work (somehow I have so far missed out on Parsifal while exploring Wagner) but have certainly been rewarded a hundred times by this one.
