This is an excellent budget introduction to one of Wagner's finest operas. In terms of the quality of the recording it is superb - crisp and clear. The first Act is exceptionally fine though that may be my personal prejudice coming through as act 1 is by far and away my favourite.

I have one contension with this recording and that is simply the tempo. The conductor rattles through the score too fast. It is impossible to ruin the Tannhauser Overture (the leitmotif which underpins the entire score), but it is very noticable from the outset that it needs to be slowed down. By rushing it I felt that some of the power is lost. The overture is resplendent, glittering and vast. It should be performed in a slower, more majestically graceful manner; essential, it ought should be savoured, not devoured, but that is what happens here alas.
