Product Description

BBC Music Magazine, (Michael Scott Rohan), February 2007

(4 stars) Has much to recommend it...there's Fisch's conducting, expansive and lyrical but dramatically paced, with splendid playing from the SOSA.

Album Description

Melba recordings issues its second volume of the first-ever SACD version of Wagners "Ring Cycle."

Reviews have been staggering for Melba Recordings' SACD release of the State Opera of South Australia's celebrated 2004 production of Wagner's Ring Cycle, launched this summer in the UK, USA and Europe. The level of international acclaim for the release of the first instalment, 'Die Walküre' has been unprecedented - and it has already won the 2006 ABC Classic FM's Listeners' Choice Award.

Describing the recording as "as ground-breaking as Georg Solti's Decca recording...one of the most significant recordings of the decade...energetic, history-in-the-making...a production worthy of Bayreuth. The most recommendable of recent Walküres", commentators acknowledge the Australian label Melba as being at the forefront of the international new wave of independent record companies revitalising classical music recording.

Melba continues its Ring series with the first opera of the Wagnerian cycle, 'Das Rheingold'. This new premiere SACD hybrid surround recording again features the talents of the State Opera of South Australia production with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and an outstanding cast of mostly Australian singers under Israeli conductor Asher Fisch. John Bröcheler sings the part of Wotan, with John Wegner as Alberich, Christopher Doig as Loge and Richard Greager as Mime. The roles of Fricka and Freia are taken by Elizabeth Campbell and Kate Ladner respectively.

The presentation and packaging of the recording is of the highest quality: a handsome hardbound volume with colour production photos, essays on the opera and the history of the Ring in Adelaide together with a full libretto.

The cycle of four operas - approximately 16 hours in duration - is the world's first 6-channel super audio CD (SACD) recording of The Ring in surround sound.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sonic Blast, 5 Sep 2009
By Jeffers (Sweden) - See all my reviews
This first SACD recording (Amsterdam's followed shortly after) is sonically first rate, audience noise is impercepitble
and the surround sound is stunning. The orchestral playing and the conducting of Asher Fisch leave nothing to desire,
a dramatic and thrusting reading. On the whole the vocal contirbutions are very good and for a live recording this performance is excellent. However, the Wotan, John Bröcheler, is somewhat problematical, his acting is superb,
his lower register impressive, but as soon as he puts pressure on his voice he developes a heavy vibrato and in
the upper reaches he is obviously at the very limits of his range. Sad, I would have given 5 stars otherwise.
He's not the first to stumble, of course, Wotan, especially in Rheingold, is a killer.
For Audio freaks this is a must, and for Wagnerites and opera fans in general this recording has a lot going for it.
