Format:VHS Tape
A great film about a great man - albeit with some unpleasant traits.
Dramatic portrayal of a dramatic life, from his early days as rising composer to friend, confident and 'in-house' composer to King Ludwig II of Bavaria.. Features all the struggles as he tries to stage the 'unperformable' Ring.
Filmed on location and with great supporting acting from Redgrave, Guilgud et al. Most magical is the way the music is blended in with the action. The great chords of lament as the beginning of Act III of Tristan play as King Ludwig reviews with dismay the remains of his defeated army, for example.
Subtle, yet powerful, telling of his affair with Cosima.
A joy to watch, seven hours is just not enough!!

The film is not bad but this copy of it is very bad indeed. Foggy! It's not even a good VHS-copy and has nothing to do with DVD. Sad.

I confess I have not yet sat through the whole nine hours, but the sampling of all four discs has whetted my appetite for a "Wagner" weekend (or two!). Viewing the first chapter on disc one will disappoint many, due to the extremely poor picture quality which is barely up to VHS standards, let alone DVD. However, from chapter two onwards and throughout the other discs, matters improve considerably.
Burton's performance is riveting, and the contributions from Olivier, Richardson, Gielgud and Vanessa Redgrave are suitably quirky. The whole thing has a great period feel and is beautifully photographed by famed cinematographer Vittorio Storaro. An excellent value DVD set.

Waner 4 DVD box set
My DVDs have come with subtitles in a foreign language,which I have been unable to delete. It is irritating and takes from my enjoyment of the film. Read more

A great work spoilt by bad sound and editing.
The price for this film is rather sheap. This is perhaps because the sound and the editing of the film itself is so bloody awful. Read more

Interesting

all good as order
bloody awful turgid stuff with Richard Burton really not up to usual brilliance. goes on and on and on and on. good to make you fall asleep!
