Finally, CPO have followed up their highly successful first CD of Wagenseil symphonies - Georg Christoph Wagenseil: 5 Symphonies - 1999 - with an additional volume. And affixing the "Volume 2" to the CD title tells us more is to come.
Manuscripts exist for over 50 symphonies from Wagenseil. Most are short (6-12 minutes), but that can sometimes be a plus - try listening to one of Hogwood's Haydn recordings, where ALL of the repeats are observed, and I think you'll know what I mean. This CD has 6 symphonies for a total of 54 minutes. And all of them are lively and extremely interesting. No, it is not Brahms, or Mahler. But these recordings, and the prior CD, show that a large orchestra is not necessary to produce highly colorful and provocative music.
