Book Description

1 Aug 2007
From stunning fabric jewellery to finely crafted mini-purses, this richly illustrated volume takes fashion art to a new level. "Wagashi" features patterns for 20 handcrafted projects - from necklaces, bracelets and earrings to decorative belts and even iPod covers - each an exquisite accessory and a tiny work of art in its own right. Full instructions are provided for several unusual craft techniques including Japanese knotwork, Delica beading, and fabric origami, each with full-colour drawings and step-by-step directions. These projects are accompanied by full-color photographs evocative of contemporary Japanese style, and every chapter opens with an original watercolor by the author, as well as text providing reflections on Japanese life and art. It is a brilliant craft gift book to give or to keep!

It's a shame there is no 'look inside' feature for this exquisite book. Colourwashed endpapers and introductions have layer on layer of Japanese styling. The designs are for sweet little pieces of bright felts and printed fabrics painstakingly turned into jewellery, small bags, purses, belts, plus tiny gift items like pincushions, key fobs, charms, fabric thimbles(!?) all mostly hand-sewn and often braided. Generally more minimalist in my personal style, I was won over by the quirky detailing, the colours, the handwork and the promise of being able to learn to make something so different.
I wonder how many people will actually make the projects though? I made one flower like the necklace on the cover, and turned it into a brooch. The instructions do look clear, yet my first attempts to make one of the simpler designs, a sort of origami pinwheel/flower were so frustrating - I only succeeded after trying it out in two colours of paper so I could have something in front of me that reproduced the diagrams closely. So I have learnt it will take time to make all the presents I hoped this book would provide inspiration for.
Go for it if you have patience and are good at hand sewing, the designs are unique.

This book has been on my wish list for some time and I eventually bought it myself.I had no idea what it contained but I was not disappointed. The projects are breathtaking although the braiding looks complicated. However, there are very comprehensive instructions so I'm sure I can master them eventually! The book is well thought out, attractive and easy to follow. I recommend it for anyone who is looking for something just a little bit different.

Lovely book for inspiration, but a little odd at times with the memories of childhood.
