PITY ABOUT THE PHOTOS 23 July 2007
By Hal2006
Whilst this book is indeed comprehensive, the photos throughout look cheap. It appears that the photos have been cut with a scissors and stuck in for publication. Inexcusable in these days of Photoshop.

The movements in the katas and gumite lack sufficient explanatory text. (For contrast see Shingo Oghami's book, where kata movements are properly explained). This book would have benefited from a glossary too. Wado history is far too brief. A real pity. You'll find much more info on the web.

The Wado Bible! 9 Jan 2006
Got this book over the week-end. This is exactly what all Wado-ryu practitioners have been waiting for - a comprehensive companion book to Wado-ryu karate.

As the synopsis says the book covers the basic techniques, Kihons and Wado Kata. The Kata are the 5 Pinan Kata, Kushanku, Naihanchi, Saishan, Chinto, Bassai, Rohai, Jion, Jitte, Niseishi and Wanshu

In one book, this is GREAT VALUE!

Any body who has studied the martial arts will know you can not learn the techniques and skills from a book, but this does provide an invaluable reference tool for instructors and students alike.

My advice is: find yourself a good club, then buy the book!

I'd have to agree with the review that compared this to Shingo Ohgami's book and found this one lacking (Shingo Ohgami's Introduction to Karate and Karate Katas of Wado Ryu are both much clearer). I bought it because I thought it would be useful as an aid to working on some of the kata which are not in other books - however I found it not to be so. Some of the stances taken in Rohai, for instance, are completely different from those used at my club. My own teacher studies regularly with Shiomitsu Sensei, the Chief Instructor for Wado Ryu in Europe, as well as training with the Grand Master when he visits the UK, and so the instruction we recieve is passed on to us from the Grand Master of Wado Ryu. I therefore find it strange that these differences exist.

Perhaps the reason that several of the 'more advanced' kata do not appear in other books is that of the difficulty of explaining highly technical actions in printed words and static pictures - and perhaps in such a case it would be better not to try because regular training with a good teacher is the true answer. I did learn something from buying this book -I should have kept my money and spent it on fuel to get to the dojo a few more times!
