I first heard of Ian & The Zodiacs from two of the Past & Present Compilations, with Tracks "No Money, No Honey" and "Come Along Girl", so when this album flashed up in my recomendations from Amazon, it went into my wish list, until last week i eventually bought it. No other recomendations to persuade me otherwise so I went for it.
And I am glad I did. All of the tracks from the sixties beat era and taken from their Star LP releases of the time, Star Club 7, Just Listen to Ian & the Zodiacs, and Locomotive!
The opening track alone is worth the money, a freakbeat version of Wade in the Water, a good start to the CD. Track 2 "As You Used To Do" is typical British Beat track,but still a good track, considering this band were one of the longest running bands in Liverpool at the time its a wonder why they get mised off most comps. Track 3 is an excellant version of Smokies "Going to a go go" and so the album continues to mix beat, R&B and soul for 26 songs.
The stand out tracks for me are the title track, Going To a Go Go, Why Cant It Be Me, Respect, The In Crowd and I Need You. There are a few beat ballads here but the good tracks outweigh those. This is a good selection of tracks, even some of the covers like "Any Day Now" or " Baby I Need Your Loving" which starts of with a bit of organ and you think oh this sounds good!! There are other tracks i have since found on the web which could have been included like "It Aint Neccasarily So" "See Saw" or the Clasic "Soulful Dress" or maybe their cover of "Cool Jerk".
Whether its Sixties Beat, Rhythm & Blues or Sixties general , then this is better than some of the options available from those genres. Well worth the money and very impressed with this purchase.
As with most of RPM ouputs the booklet is very informative and well presented. Five stars.

This cd is Great if you like the 1960's British Invasion.They tend to do great cover versions of r&b,soul,and motown songs in their own style.I really like the raw sounding rthyms and beats of this type of music.They are a very tight sounding band with great harmonies.They are amongst one of my favourite British bands from the 1960's that were more popular in Germany and America than they were in England,due to their records and live touring being better promoted over there.Maybe they should do a volume 2 of this band as there are more songs to put onto another cd.I wish that they would put all of the Locomotive lps tracks out and the song titled "All of Me" as well as the Beatles cover songs.This is a great cd and a very welcome release.Highly Recommended!

First of all - it's nice to have a compilation of Ian & the Zodiacs on CD at long last.
I have some reservations, though. The compilers have chosen to pick 'the best' (always a matter of opinion) of what was obtainable. This means that no LP is offered in its entirety and single tracks are picked rather willie-nillie. That's not very gentile towards any collector - and it certainly makes a pig's breakfast out of any sequel to be considered for release in the future.
Furthermore, the tracks are not presented cronologically and we are not given any clues as to their origin.
Many years ago, I stumbled upon a copy (in mono) of The American Philips LP. My guess is, that this one is identical to the 'Show 7' LP (as indeed the front cover photos) but again - no information about this. John Reed has authored a very good essay about the band, but I don't like his tendency to name some singles or LP's 'better' than others. The listener should be allowed to decide for himself.
- and why in the whole world does RPM follow suit on the silly trend of NOT informing us of stereo/mono ?
