Navigation

Bamboo tablets are a great help for navigating your computer - whether you're moving your cursor across the screen, opening and closing files and folders, or working in common software applications. Bamboo tablets combine pen and multi-touch in one tablet, allowing you to alternate between the pen and gestures on the tablet surface.

Multi-touch makes it possible to use simple finger taps and hand gestures to navigate around your desktop and perform common tasks. Wacom introduces nine useful gestures that you can use with your tablet.

To navigate with the pen, just hover with the pen tip over the tablet surface. Each point on the tablet maps to a corresponding place on screen, making it easy to move your cursor. Tap the pen to select, and tap twice to open files. With a pen, you can perform any motion or command that you make with a mouse, and many more. Most tablet users will tell you that once you've got used to the pen, you'll never want to be without one.

Alternating between input devices can help reduce wrist strain caused by repetitive strain or RSI. A tablet provides an ergonomic alternative to traditional input devices, allowing you to work with your computer with minimal effort and from a relaxed position. A tablet assumes all the normal functions of a traditional computer mouse including basic navigation and selection, but provides vital ergonomic advantages as well.

Fun with photos

Introduce a little bit of fun to your digital photographs. Bamboo helps you to bring out their best with anything from subtle improvements to radical changes. With just a couple of flicks of your pen, you can make irritating "red-eyes" a thing of the past. Personalise your photos by signing your name or drawing directly on them. Or, you can precisely cut yourself out of regular photos and paste yourself into the background of your choice. Put yourself on an exotic beach without even leaving your house. All of the above enhancements are easy to do with Bamboo and photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop Elements, which is included with every Bamboo Fun Pen and Touch.

Once you have your photos looking the way you want, share them with your family and friends. Adobe Photoshop Elements includes the ability to create professional looking photo books that can be quickly and easily edited and rearranged. There is support for tagging and keywords so your favourite photos can be located within seconds. Or, use online photo sharing sites such as Flickr and Picasa to show your snapshots to the world.

I primarily wanted a graphics tablet for photo post-processing so was interested in the Pen part of this tablet. However, the Touch and Pen has more pressure levels than just the Pen (1024 instead of 512) and I thought the Touch functions might be useful so I opted for this. I compared the spec of many other tablets, decided on a Wacom due to the good reviews and decided not to spend more than £100 as my usage probably wouldn't warrant it.

Installing the Wacom software from the supplied disk on my Vista machine was quick and straightforward and, following a restart, the tablet was identified and started working properly straight away. The software consists basically of drivers and configuration settings and some tutorials, which are not really needed as I found everything very intuitive. There are options to tweak the sensitivity of the pen and touch functions separately and to change the orientation of the tablet, and the functions of the buttons on the tablet and on the pen. Within Vista you can also change the options for gestures (pre-determined motions with the Pen or your finger that trigger an action such as Back or Forward in a browser window) and setup handwriting recognition.

The tablet and pen are both well built, the tablet feels nice and solid with four buttons down the side and, although the pen doesn't feel quite as solid (I imagine the more expensive tablets have better pens) it is certainly not a problem. The touch and pen function do not work at the same time (which is good, otherwise you would be accidentally drawing all the time), but it switches modes very quickly whenever the pen is moved in or out of range. The active area fills most of the tablet with a small-ish border that doesn't get in the way, but lets you handle the tablet.

Background: I am a first year multimedia design student, and I also work free lance. I use this with my imac and macbook pro. I use this product in photoshop cs4, flash c34 and illustrator cs4

When I got my tablet it was nicely protected in the packaging. The CD setup doesn't take too long, and it takes you through some tutorials. Like dragging, and hand movements etc.

After that I practiced drawing with it. It can take a bit of time to get the hang of it, but with a bit of practice you'll be a natural. And you will be working a lot faster because of the pen, and I also find that when I use the mouse for a long period of time my hand tends to ache, but with the pen I don't have this problem.

I have never had any problems with it (so far) and I have hand it for about 2 or 3 months now.

The cable is nice and long and I sometimes move my chair back and place the tablet on my lap and then use it.

The tablet comes with a polystyrene-like cover (I'm sure most people chuck it away) But I am using mine to protect my tablet from damage and dust. And when I travel with it I just pop it in a laptop zip up sleeve (It was actually for my 15inch macbook pro) But the tablet fits in nicely.

One downside is the nibs, on buying this product I didn't know that the nibs needed replacing.
The pen comes with 4 spare nibs.
After some use with the pen the nibs wear down a bit. I have a slight dent in my first nib, but I just took it out (with the tweezers thing supplied) and I turned it and placed it back in so that the dented bit is on the top (the side I don't use against the tablet) So now it is like new.

As an illustrator who has used Wacom for many years I have always been impressed by their products. My old Intuos is still going strong but being serial port will not work on my new Mac. So with budget constraints to think of I opted for the Bamboo pen and touch. And I have to say once more I have a very good product. The touch mod is very good for simple browsing, though I find myself switching between mouse and pad when I need more precision. However if you are using the keyboard keep the pad well out of the way as I found that accidently leaning on the pad while typing did some strange things. The pen function works as well as I expected with the single exception that I keep losing my custom settings when ever I shut down and have to reset it every time I reboot. But for the price it is a very useful piece of kit that fits the bill for my professional work.

I bought this tablet and pen as I'm doing increasing amounts of design work and photo editing and wanted a pen which would do a good job but not break the bank. I think I hit the jackpot with this one, I've not used a pen before so don't have anything to compare it with but all I can say is I wish I'd bought one years ago. I mostly use a package called GIMP and using the pen I got more done in 5 minutes than I had in an hour of faffing around with a mouse. I love the pen so much I've ditched using a mouse altogether and use my pen and tablet exclusively. It also writes so you don't have to use a keyboard and does shortcut strokes for things like copy and paste. I suffer a bit with RSI and hate using a mouse but also struggle with keyboard shortcuts if I do them too much and this has proved to be the perfect solution. As I already said, should have bought one years ago. This tablet looks great, is very lightweight, no battery in the pen and no cable connecting the pen to the tablet so very easy to use with nothing getting in the way. The tutorial it comes with is brilliant and I've been very impressed with it from the box it arrived in to completing the set up. It claims to come with software which strictly speaking it doesn't, you have to download it from the website when you want to use it and have access to it for a limited amount of time (which you can repeat as often as you want). It is easy to get to though from the tablet menu which is always available so it's not as arduous as it sounds. Not ideal and not clear when you buy it which is a bit of a pain. I still can't downgrade it though and have given it 5 stars because it's lovely in every way. My partner keeps pinching it too and is so taken with it he's going to buy one too. Can't recommend it enough.
