Book Description

31 May 2013

Are you inspired by the little things, the bits others might overlook? A crack in the sidewalk? The trunk of a fallen tree? Shards of broken pottery? Do you want your artwork to speak to the abstract nature of color, and shape and texture, composition and mood?

With Wabi-Sabi Art Workshop, you'll learn to use your appreciation for the simple things in life--the ordinary, the aged, the humble--as your inspiration for making expressive, intuitive art. You will come to embrace imperfection and recognize that, yes, in fact, there is such a thing as a happy accident!

The wabi-sabi philosophy of art is probably a little different from what you're used to--it's a style that finds inspiration and beauty in the imperfect, impermanent and humble nature of everyday objects. And there is a special freedom in wabi-sabi's abstract aesthetic, a forgiving approach that celebrates so-called mistakes and fosters an experimental spirit, encouraging you to build up and tear back with abandon.

Inside Wabi-Sabi Art Workshop You'll Find:

  • Dozens of inspiration photos and tips for taking your own.
  • 27 traditional haikus.
  • 35 techniques using such diverse media as oil and acrylic paints, alcohol inkers, foils and leaf, pastels, plaster, collage and handmade papers, teabags, paper towels, coffee, crayons, encaustic paints, fibers and more.

1.0 out of 5 stars Step away from the elder! 4 Oct 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A bit breathless and new agey for me; the book recommends that for inspiration I should try "stroking the wrinkled face of an elder".

Could be a useful book for someone new to art as it has step by step guides to creating works, some rather good, some abysmal (such as old buttons and dolls stuck to canvases). Happy accidents indeed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Love the idea of 'not being quite right' 14 Nov 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
It was a bit too way out for me in the practice of it, but could relate to the theory. I now can look at things from a different angle now, perhaps that is what the book was intending to do. Most of the samples were based on encaustic paint, which means buying a whole selection of another media. But I will certainly use some of the ideas in my own work with the media and techniques I have.

4.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive step by step book 20 Oct 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Great for those who wish to experiment in creating texture in their work.

The illustrations are inspirational and at the same time the book is a comprehensive 'how to' manual for both the beginner and the experienced artist who wishes to branch out into other methods of experimentation.
