Manufacturer's Description

Last year, you rose from the minor leagues of the WWE to become not only one of its top Superstars, but the World Heavyweight Champion. Maybe it was too much success too quickly. Maybe you were just not ready to carry the target on your back that comes with being a champion. Or maybe you were simply betrayed. Whatever the reason, you lost the title and now must find your way back to the elusive path of vindication. This time around, the path will be even more difficult as the line between friend and foe is not always clear. This time around, trust no one&

Not bad 9 Jan 2006
Day of Reckoning 2 is not a bad game in its own right, but having played it to death in the last couple of weeks it does not compare much to the great N64 game No Mercy. The story mode angles are very good, it is like watching Raw or Smackdown, you don't know what is going to happen next. No voiceovers, but the text used has all the relevant catchphrases etc. There is a varied level of difficulty, some matches were very easy and others very hard. One match against the undertaker took six of my finishing moves on him to get the pin! Also you practically have to win every match in story mode, give or take one or two, which can be very frustrating sometimes. I also do not like how you cannot go through story mode with an existing wrestler; very stupid idea by the makers of this game as it means you can only use the WWE stars in exhibition mode and have to take time at the start to come up with a new wrestler capable of competing.

The entrances are very realistic and have a high level of detail. Having the ring announcer Tony Chimmel is a nice touch and gives the entrances a TV-like feel. I was very impressed with them, and the Create-An-Entrance for your created wrestler is very extensive and you can change everything from pyros to camera angles to taunts.

There are a few annoying flaws of this game that disappoint me. The controls as a whole are quite easy to play, and fans of No Mercy will find it similar for basic grapple and striking moves. But the most frustrating thing for me is that whenever you take a hit, you have to tap A to get back up. The more damage you take, the more you have to tap and the longer you stay down. You have to do the same for pins, submissions and TKOs. Also if you are in a match with more than one opponent, any moves that land on you if you are on the floor will hurt you, and you'll have to tap A more and more. It is very frustrating and poorly done by the makers.

The game is slow loading in general compared to other cube games, and having to wait can be annoying sometimes. Overall a good game, but could have been so much better. The last WWE game I had before this was Wrestlemania X8, and this is a big improvement on that.
However there has still been no successor to WWF No Mercy on the N64, the developers need to go back and look at that, update it for next generation, and build on what made that title so great. Until that happens it looks like they just don't make wrestling games like they used to, which is very disappointing.

You may ask why I nearly rated this game with two stars? This game has good features, good roster and looks great but....the gameplay and the A.I. As you progress through the scripted story mode you will soon discover that no matter your stats or your moveset you need to hit your opponent with every single one of your moves around twice to get even one finsher! Whereas your opponent hits you three times to get his. your opponent will be able and frequently does counter everything you have yet you will be lucky to counter him maybe 4 times during the match! In certain match types aka those in which you are pitted against three other opponents, you will quickly discover that they will target you and mostly you for the entire match making winning difficult! Oh and if you lose you are rewarded with having to go through it again as progression is by winning only. My opinion if you have gamecube and plenty of friends to play the game with then by all means go for it. If you own a Playstation2 wait for Smackdown v Raw as the makers seem to care about that game a lot more.
