All-Stars is - Alright 1 April 2011
Platform for Display:Xbox 360|Edition:Standard Edition
Fun:
I had really high hopes for this game having grown tired of the simulation nature of the Raw vs Smackdown series.
Rumours were that WWE All-Stars would be more like the fantastic Wrestling games found on the Nintendo 64; WWF No Mercy is my idea of wrestling perfection.

Sadly, WWE All-Stars fails to reach these heights. The game is essentially a button bashing 'spot fest'. I've seen someone describe it as how wrestling matches work when kids play with the old Hasbro wrestling figures in the plastic ring, and its soooooo true!

With a mix of 30 wrestlers past and present, fans of all generations will find someone they'd like to control. There are plenty of game modes such as cage match, extreme rules match, elimination, tag match, but they all play much the same. These is also 'Fantasy Warefare' where the 30 wreslters have been paired up to face off, such as HBK vs The Undertaker for 'Mr Wrestlemania' Each of these 15 matches have a video packages leading into the bout with archived match footage and promos that fans of WWE will certainly enjoy.

So to sum this game up, its essentially a button bashing beat-em-up with all the bells and whistles of the WWE.
Would I reccommend the game to others? Yes, just don't get your hopes up for it to resemble a wrestling contest.
Kids will love it, and I can see it being to go-to game for an after the pub gaming session.

On a Final note, why are the awsome tag team Demolition still overlooked for these Legend games?

Fun:
Having skimmed other reviews and played the demo a couple of times, I thought I'd pick up a copy for what was a good price. Even after spending a few spare MS points on some character packs, it was still less than the Million Dollar version.

I'd been hoping for a long time for a WWE game featuring a decent showing of classic stars from the early 90s when i first became a fan and really hoped this game was the answer. The roster is pretty good, although there are around 20 notables from that era that really should have been featured (Bulldog, Owen Hart, Demolition, Nasty Boys and so on) and a small number more (Roadwarriors, Dusty Rhodes, Million Dollar Man etc) that have to be purchased as an upgrade, which seemed a bit of a con, given the sizeable rosters featured in recent SvR titles.

The presentation is really appealing and doesn't take itself too seriously, which fits my view of the wrestling world as 'a comic book soap opera for guys' pretty nicely. The beefed up characters, over-exagerated swaggers and matrix inspired finishing moves give a really good feel to the game. The arenas are nice too; The Wrestlemania stage in particular is cooler than some of the actual setups of recent times.

Unfortunately, there are lot of minor grumbles and some considerable downsides which spoil it. In places there is a real lack of attention to detail. Classic characters have newer ring music; commentary nowhere near what is happening in the ring; around half of the wrestlers can execute a canadian destroyer (find it on youtube...) which is an interesting touch... A real niggle is why, after winning by KO and the winner announced, do they then go back to pin the opponent?! Totally naff. And, despite his history and influence in the industry, Hulk Hogan's character sprite really doesn't need to be THAT BIG!!

For what appears to be a game with relatively limited content, loading sequences take a long time and can make animations on the game screens quite jerky. My current 360 is only 3 months old, but it really has to work hard getting this game going.

But, the thing that ultimately ruined it for me, is that the game controls are really bad. Even on the easiest setting, the CPU characters are total beasts and the attempts to pulling off moves soon makes playing the game frustrating. Consequently, each match becomes a repetition of: quick-strike, quick-strike, quick-strike, quick-grapple, strong-grapple to downed opponent and then repeat, until you can get the pin. There is no skill involved and every character plays pretty much the same. Holding combinations of buttons to charge signature moves is rediculous as, by the time you actually pull off the move, you've lost half of your health meter. Additionally, mashing your joy-pad buttons fast enough to escape a pinfall is completely impossible. And if you're tempted by a cage match, don't do it. But if you really must, leave plenty of time. Escaping the cage is un-necessarily complicated.

I was determined to love this game, but after only 24hrs with it, I can't stand it :( Please THQ, give us the game that this should have been!!
