to start with my criticisms: firstly, the pictures in the book were of quite poor and low quality and secondly, peter jeffery could have engaged with the question somewhat more.
so the good things about the book: it was a very easy read and peter jeffery obviously comes from a biblical christian point of view. he asks first 'who is God?' and 'what is man?' then highlights the impossibility of religion or morality or sincerity as ways to God. in this he also shows man's need of one to go between man and God and bridge the gap--this is shown to be Jesus. he shows that the bible's answer is that Jesus died in the place of humankind, paying the punishment for the wrong we have all done and giving us the 'clean clothes' of perfection that we need to approach God. he shows at the end that we all have a choice to go Jesus' way and accept his death for us or go our own way.
this illustration within the book makes it quite clear:
"some restaurants insist on a certain standard of dress, and refuse to allow a man in if he is not wearing a tie. customers may object, but the proprietors have a perfect right to maintain their standards. however as businessmen, they do not want to turn customers away. so when a man is refused admission, they will say, 'don't go away, sir. we will provide you with a tie! once this is provided and put on, the standard is met and there is no barrier to admission. the restaurant has set its standard, but then provides its own answer for those who fall short of it." (pg. 18)
none of us has or can meet God's standards but God the one and only Son, Jesus, has met them for us and when we accept this for ourselves, we can have free access to God.
