Product Description

In 2011, the Numero Group got in touch with Codeine and pitched the idea of reissuing the band's three records, complete with bonus tracks and the label's usual archival care. The band agreed and the results were beautifully packaged, wonderful-sounding remasters of each release (1991's Frigid Stars LP, 1992's Barely Real, and 1994's The White Birch) complete with enough bonus tracks to double the running length. The albums were combined together for the limited-edition box set When I See the Sun, which included a large foldout poster but no extra music. No matter whether the albums are bought separately or in the box set, they are vital documents of early-'90s indie rock from a band that pioneered intensely slow and achingly sad music.

5 frigid stars...minus 1 star taken off for CD packaging 6 Mar. 2014

Let's get this out of the way: the music contained in this boxset is 5 ('effin) stars, no question about it...not that you didn't know that already, if you're taking a look at this. Codeine found the golden median between delicate folk melodicism, austere post-punk ambience and doom metal heft (!), forging an unforgettable sound that has influenced subsequent generations of epic indie/heavy rockers (think Low, Mogwai, Harvey Milk, Jesu, Year of No Light, etc). This truly is, music for the harshest of winters, both real and figurative...and catchy, too! Basically if you're into moody, powerful music you need this...a handsome package with gorgeous gatefolds modeled after Codeine's own stark aesthetic...

....which brings me to the one peeve I have about this release. Maybe it's because this is my first time buying a vinyl+CD package (or maybe I'm anemic?) but I found that the CDs were lodged in too tight in their cardboard sleeves, to the point that one has to exert an almost incredible amount of force to pry them out...which is something you never, ever want to do to a CD in a tight cardboard sleeve. Having no choice however, pull them out I did...which resulted in an instant mega-scratch on the Frigid Stars CD...sigh. Oh well. Just wanted to give any buyers a heads up on that. So, to sum it up: music, 5 stars, art design 5 stars, CD, umm, pouch design...0 stars...which ends up averaging 4 stars overall (what do you mean that's not how division works?).
