By Jazzrook TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The little-known trumpeter/cornetist Webster Young(1932-2003) recorded this album as a tribute to jazz singer Billie Holiday on June 14, 1957 with Lester Young-influenced tenor saxophonist Paul Quinichette, pianist Mal Waldron, guitarist Joe Puma, bassist Earl May & drummer Ed Thigpen.
The six memorable tracks include one original from the leader plus five tunes associated with Billie Holiday including an impressive version of 'Don't Explain' and a dramatic arrangement of 'Strange Fruit'.
'The Lady' is a moving and beautiful tribute album that deserves to be more widely known.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Mainstream Jazz 26 Feb 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I sought out this CD after reading the review by 'Jazzrook' and I'm delighted I did so. I agree with all his comments so I won't repeat them. Despite the date of this Prestige recording (1957) and the presence of the Prestige house pianist Mal Waldron this is mainly mainstream jazz.

Webster Young is surely less well known than he deserves to be, but credit must also be given to Paul Quinichette who shares the honours on this CD. Not sure the sound quality is all it might be but, hey, maybe there's only so much that can be done with old master tapes. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant, though not essential 1 Jun 2008
By Gazzelloni - Published on
Format:Audio CD
To my knowledge, this is the only time Webster Young recorded an album as leader. With a nice soft-spoken tonality, Young is a skilled enough trumpet and cornet player. This album could have been something so much more--a feeling one gets when listening to these tracks. For some, Mal Waldron drew their attention to this album. Waldron is definitely the standout musician on these sets, with excellent chord choices and interesting phrasing. All in all worth the money, though there are far more essential Waldron albums to own. (Recommended)

Webster Young (cornet and trumpet)
Mal Waldron (piano)
Paul Quinichette (tenor sax)
Joe Puma (guitar)
Earl May (bass)
Ed Thigpen (drums)

4.0 out of 5 stars Webster Young is "One" Of A Kind 4 April 2006

Format:Audio CD
To correct the review below, this is NOT Ben Webster & Lester Young but a trumpeter named Webster Young. The reviewer is otherwise accurate.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant record 30 Sep 2004
By Morten Friis - Published on
Format:Audio CD
No-one reviewed this - so let me !

I bought this record many years ago - and I still enjoy listening to a very good musician who has a personal expession.

Mr. Webster goes very well together with "The Vice pres".

Its mainly a selection of pretty ballads, soft and tender Jazz of very high standard.
