Wartime Schooldays in Boston evokes many memories. -- John Asquith

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.

"The day war broke out... my missus said to me... what are you going to do about it?" Robb Wilton helped everyone to see the funny side of it but no one was laughing that Sunday morning, when Neville Chamberlain made his broadcast.

Our neighbour, Mrs Burton, broke the news, as even on a Sunday our wireless was never switched on unitl evening. My reaction did not match that of my parents, as I had no conception then of the change to everyone's life that would be made that day. As a five year old still settling to life in the infants at Staniland School, war was just something that our gang did with the William's gang.
