You’re One Step Away from the Adventure of Your Life

Deep within you lies the same faith and longing that sent Peter walking across the wind-swept Sea of Galilee toward Jesus.

In what ways is the Lord telling you, as he did Peter, "Come"?

John Ortberg invites you to consider the incredible potential that awaits you outside your comfort zone. Out on the risky waters of faith, Jesus is waiting to meet you in ways that will change you forever, deepening your character and your trust in God. The experience is terrifying. It’s thrilling beyond belief. It’s everything you’d expect of someone worthy to be called Lord.

The choice is yours to know him as only a water-walker can, aligning yourself with God’s purpose for your life in the process. There’s just one requirement: If You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve Got to Get Out of the Boat. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Water walking is always diffcult as it takes faith to get out of the boat. In this book John Ortberg uses humurous anecdotes and real life stories to carry his points across. Just who was the failure; was it Peter who walked on the water and sank or the others who stayed in the boat? At least Peter had something the others did not, he had actually walked on water! As I read this book I found my faith rising and my desire to "get out of the boat" increasing. In dealing with the circumsatnces which will be encountered as we step out of the boat, Ortberg both encourages and raises faith but builds in a good measure of realism and honesty. He handles things like fear, failure, waiting, focussing on Jesus etc. Importantly he also talks of learning to discern when Jesus is actually asking us to get out of the boat rather than dangerous presumption.
An excellent book which will increase your faith and is also exteremely readable.

I can only agree with other reviewers. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It takes you phrase by phrase through the story of Peter walking on water (from the Gospels) and applies it to our lives today. It has also given me a fresh approach to reading and interpreting events related in the New Testament

This practical book can challenge our smugness as christians. With John Ortberg's stories that tie in with some down to earth and heavenly guidance, this is a must for the activist. The realism of being a boat potato coupled with the fact the once out of the boat we can fail, is most helpful. This book has been for me the kick I needed. I'm reading it for the second time, taking note of the questions that in mid life need to be asked.

This book is brilliant. An easy read, broken into digestible chapters, this book will give Christians lacking confidence to live more actively for God (the majority of us in truth!), the boost they need. You will breathe sigh's of relief as you realise that you don't need to be a supersonic Christian, but simply walk as you are, trusting God will do the rest if you focus on Him. Ortberg is fantastic at making you feel refreshed and encouraged, challenging where you need it, but affirming you too. This is beautifully crafted and will leave you with a burden off your shoulders and a desire to Get out the Boat and walk :)

This book is totally fantastic. As a christian i found it challenged me to step out of the proverbial boat and be bolder in my faith. I'm recommending it to all of my mates, its a must read. It is easy going, funny in places yet deals with serious topics.

... Well, not hopelessly weak. John Ortberg has great fun unpacking the story of Peter walking on water in detail. It's just that sometimes points are driven hope by his obviously huge personality and brilliant illustrations rather than convincingly unpacked from Scripture. That, of course, can be a very dangerous thing; and from time to time I wasn't sure that his point and God's point were the same.

Having said that, he mostly guards himself from that danger, and the book is so practically helpful that it will make a real difference to my life and my Christian ministry. It has encouraged me in a powerful way to be bold in trusting God, rather than being too cautious to dare to do anything.

One particular point that will stick with me was a chapter that focussed on King David and his days living in the cave - the overwhelming frustrations and feeling of God's absence, yet trusting God and doing right by him even then.

Thank you John Ortberg for your thoughtful insights and encouragement.

This is a must read for every evangelical follower of Christ! I would place this book in the top ten books every Christian should read. I've read several of John Ortberg's books and while they are all excellent this is probably my favourite. The book is easy to read and breaks down into diferent aspects of Peter's question, invitation, stepping out of the boat and actually walking on the water as well as his sinking and Jesus's lesson about faith. John Ortberg draws from his own experience with great humour and is honest enough to relate his own failures. John Ortberg makes it is easy for the reader to identify with the apostle Peter. Getting out of the boat is a risky venture but being the good pastor that he is John Ortberg makes practical suggestions to help us get one leg over the side of the boat as we take that risky first step. This book does bring a challenge, but guess what? if we are not being challenged, then its likely we are not growing in faith. 10 out of ten.

Wanting to do more for God but struggling to be motivated? John Ortberg's excellent style will get you thinking. Full of real life examples, down to earth and easy to read. By the end of the book you will be challenged and reviewing your current choices. A superb book which has changed me and helped me realise the highs and lows that come with serving an Almighty God. A powerful book which will encourage and inspire!
