5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money 3 Oct 2005
Waking the Dead is an Emmy winning series and from watching this box set it is easy to see why. It contains the pilot episode and all of the first series, and they are a fantastic group of episodes, well written and well acted. The central cast in the series are strong from the start, particularly Trevor Eve and Sue Johnston, whose on screen relationship and chemistry is a pleasure to watch. The stories themselves are all strong, full of suspense and clever plot development throughout. There are some strong performances from the guest stars such as Angela Griffen and Annette Crosbie. There are hours of quality entertainment on this DVD from this series which is not just another average crime drama. Well worth the money!

5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly fantastic 4 July 2006
I was first introduced to this programme in series four and I have been hooked ever since. There are many UK crime dramas that appear to be based on ideas first tried in the US. In this case Waking the Dead is the UK mirror of the US's Cold Case.

Waking the Dead is superior by miles. The characters are all nicely fleshed out and it is refreshing to see the confrontation between the characters. Too many dramas which feature groups of people portray them as all getting along. WTD clearly shows the tension that always arises between groups of people that work closely together for long periods.

The Pilot episode is excellent and laid down many of the aspects that we now see in every episode. The episode "Blind Beggar" was especially good with its little twists and turns. It is true that some of the outcomes can be seen some way off but I don't feel that this distracts from the story or the suspense. After all you can never be certain that you're right.

This box set contains five two hour stories and each one is excellent. Buy it now and get series two asap.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb 23 Jun 2006
I have just started watching this box set again - I already have series 2 pre-booked!

I'm not usually a fan of detective dramas, as they tend to be very similar to each other. However, 'Waking the Dead' is unique. I first started watching in about the fourth series, and was immediately hooked. I am now building them up on DVD so I can watch them when I like!

The series is darker and more unconventional than the average detective drama. Trevor Eve in particular lends a kind of manic realism - far from being overtly childish, as some people have suggested, his character, DCI Boyd, is startlingly real.

All the cast's performances are solid, the scripts well-plotted and tightly controlled, which always leaves you eagerly awaiting the next episode. However, lazy viewers beware - this is not mind-numbing, dull television - if you want to watch it, be prepared to concentrate. If you just want to vegetate, go watch Big Brother.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kept Me Riveted to the Sofa 25 Dec 2010
By Stephanie De Pue TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Waking the Dead: Season 1, (2000). This is a British mystery/police procedural television series made by and for the BBC (British Broadcasting Company). To the best of my knowledge, it has only been seen in the U.S. on BBCAmerica: at least that's where I saw it, some years ago. But it stuck in my memory, as it just might in yours. The series is set in contemporary times, and may be considered a British, slower-moving version of the American CSI. It follows the cold case unit, police investigators who use modern techniques to solve old murder cases, and has won international Emmys. The unit, led by DSI (Detective Supervising Inspector) Peter Boyd (Trevor Eve), includes cops, a scientist, and a psychologist/profiler, who do their best to combine forensics, psychology and old-fashioned police work. It was created by Barbara Machin, as, apparently, an original concept, and in fact, shows a strong female influence at the helm throughout. This set consists of three disks, running approximately 567 minutes, and has good subtitles.

Eve, a somber, gripping and intense presence, (Heat Of The Sun [DVD] [1998],) is ably supported by Sue Johnston (The Royle Family - The Complete Collection (2010) [DVD]) as Grace Foley, psychologist/profiler, and they play off each other well. In fact, they play off each other so well that Holly Aird, playing the unit's forensics expert Frankie Wharton, who was originally given second billing behind Eve on the pilot episode, is dropped to third billing when the series proper begins.

This is a brilliant series with an equally brilliant cast lead by Trevor Eve as Detective Superintendant Peter Boyd. He runs the Met's cold case unit set up to re-investigate old murders from years past. This involves re-interviewing witnesses and going over the forensic evidence to find the truth. Eve puts in a brilliant performance as Boyd who will stop at nothing to solve the case no matter what the team are up against. Not forgetting Sue Johnson ( Dr Grace Foley) , Holly Aird (Dr Frankie ) It's a gripping series from start to finish and deserves to run and run. This is so much better than the American shows of the same type due to the cast and strong stories.
