I AM A WAGNER FAN, MAYBE FANATIC SO AS WOTAN IN DIE WALKURE IS THE CENTRAL CHARACTER I BOUGHT THIS WITH SOME TREPIDATION, MY STANDARDS ARE HIGH. I HAD ONLY HEARD Willard White in Porgy and Bess, Wagner was a completly different kettle of fish, and I had been used to hearing such legendary Wotan's as George London, Hans Hotter etc. From the first few notes I was opened mouthed as they say, to check my first reaction I played Wotan's farewell here was my perfect Wotan, not only from his glorious singing but he acted the part just as well here was all the pathos, saddness. What a performance.
The rest of the singing was great as well, the whole performane was mesmerising. Yes I agree that Hunding was a little young, but that's nit-picking. It left me frustrated that Whillard White had only done Die Walkure how I longed to see and hear him in Rhinegold and Siegfried. But this is without dout my favourite Die Walkure.
So if you are a Wagner fan this is essensial listening Daniel Barenboim - Wagner - Tristan und Isolde [DVD] [2007]
I cannot recommend this too highly
Richard Wagner - Der Ring des Nibelungen [DVD] [2007]
