Book Description

11 Dec 1997
Mozart's Singspiel 'The Magic Flute' is regarded as one of the greatest operas of the entire repertoire. What makes it a great work of art is Mozart's unique ability to translate his humanistic ideals into music of extraordinary beauty and suggestiveness. The original libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder and Carl Ludwig Giesecle was a tale about good and evil, in which Sarastro, the high priest of an enlightened brotherhood, abducts Pamina, whose mother is the evil Queen of the Night. The Queen sends Prince Tamino to save Pamina. Tamino not only falls in love with Pamina, but also accepts Sarastro as the incarnation of truth and goodness. Tamino's counterpart is Papageno, the Queen's bird-catcher, whose earthiness counterbalances Tamino's idealism. Predictably, because of the Magic Flute and Papageno's bells, love and goodness triumph, Sarastro overcomes the Queen of the Night, Tamino and Pamina are united after many trials, and Papageno finds Papagena, a female version of himself - the principal theme of the whole opera being love. This is the Schirmer Edition of the Vocal Score in the original German with an English translation by Ruth and Thomas Martin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical! 1 Sep 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This is a great piano reduction of the score. Most of the songs are not overly difficult to play, and they are written in the original keys. I like to play along on the piano as I listen to the music on the CD! This one comes highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good used score. 24 May 2013

This used score was in good condition, only the binding was coming off. The seller was very honest about its condition, it still was a very good copy and Schirmer's in my opinion is the best name to buy.
It is complete, with table of contents, acts and scenes and page numbers, and arias also listed.

Other brands can lack these vital things .

5.0 out of 5 stars Good 6 Dec 2012

Overall, the score was great. There are a few places where there isn't German and a few places where the English is missing, but they weren't very big sections. They were also easy to interpret. For instance, when it was missing the English, the only German text was "Sie lebt, Sie lebt"-"she lives, she lives." No rocket science needed to figure that out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just enough 16 Feb 2012

It's great to have the score and the Schirmer edition is nice -- although I tend to be biased against Schirmer and favor the tried and true urtext editions. The picture is the yellow Schirmer front and although there is a note on there saying that is not how it will look I still expected it. My bad. I received the standard Schirmer redd-ish front.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Score 30 Jan 2010

This score is awesome. I think it's the closest edition to the Kalmus you can get if it isn't just a copy. THe English translation in great although in a definitely more formal and classical format rather than the translation used by the Metropolitan Opera. The production I used this in was great and it was because the music was clear and easy to read and words for both languages were printed clearly. Great and enduring edition of the opera score!
