Why would anybody read an obscure 1970 novel written by an influential but not enormously popular African American musician? It is a fair question. The answer is that I am a huge Gil Scott Heron fan; I have loved his music for over 20 years and it was my love of his music that led me to the Vulture.

This is a better book than I had feared - Gil Scott Heron writes well and creates a complex and interesting story that held my attention throughout. However, it is very much of its time: some of the dialogue feels very dated and his sensibilities are very firmly rooted in the politics and issues of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

It is an enjoyable read and interesting for fans of Gil Scott Heron because of the additional insight it gives into the man.
