Hot on the heels of Just Trains "Rascal and Cottonwood" route pack for Rail Simulator comes their Voyager pack. The Class 220's and 221's were brought in by Virgin Trains to replace aging HST's and loco hauled rolling stock on their Cross Country services (the franchise for which has subsequently gone to Arriva). While the use of shorter albeit more frequent services resulted in some controversy, there's no denying that the Voyagers are one of the more iconic - and successful - of the new train fleets introduced in recent years.
The pack contains both Class 220 and 221 variants in a variety of different liveries. I believe the models were actually put together by the Railwaves group who have a proven success record with add-ons for MS Train Sim and the Auran Trainz programme. There's little to find fault with here - the external appearance looks good, the cabs are detailed and well modelled. The passenger interior view is one of the best I've seen in a train sim and as to be expected from a Railwaves product, the custom sound set is excellent - including what appears to be replacement audio for the awful default sound effects.
Physics and train handling is good - of course with so much power available and superior "blended" braking even the steepest route doesn't present much of a driving or handling challenge. As an aside, it would be nice at some stage to see some more traditional first generation modern traction released for Rail Simulator which actually require the virtual driver to plan and think ahead a bit more rather than the "push and go" contemporary stuff.
The product appears to be DRM free and once installed you can put the disc away. Unlike "Rascal" there's no printed manual but some pdf sheets are installed along with the trains. Just Trains/Railwaves have included a number of scenarios for each of the default routes to try out the Voyager, including some fictional (fanciful?!) runs on the US and German routes. If I have one gripe it's that the product could probably have done with a few more scenarios. Creating scenarios in RS is not the easiest of tasks and developers/publishers of commercial products need to ensure longevity by providing more than just some basic activities. Bear in mind too that the price of the Voyager set is more than the RS core product itself now costs in most outlets and that you are only getting the train itself, not a new route.
In conclusion the Voyager set is a well modelled and detailed train-set to expand Rail Simulator, maybe a bit pricey for a single add-on though.
