This is a wonderful collection of songs, beautifully sung and played by Dawson and Drake. The selected pieces are mostly on the sweet side: Poulenc, Chabrier, Faure and the nice surprise Hahn. The two musicians have a very light touch with the music, Dawsons voice tender, the working out of the music rather small scaled. All in all a delicate and surprisingly varied programme, always tender and never too sweet.

Wonderful selection of repertoire, brilliant vocals 7 Mar. 2013
By Michael Bartlett - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I love this recording. I have loved Lynne Dawson's recordings of other repertoire and this venture proves to be yet another success for her. She and her terrific pianist Julius Drake have put together a lovely selection of songs, from Le Chemins de l'amour to Le secret. The vocals are brilliant, completely suited to this repertoire. I want to go back to Paris just from hearing these sensuous and evocative chansons. A few other wonderful singers have recorded this type of repertoire and selection of songs (including the wonderful Frederica von Stade and Felicity Lott) and this recording is right up there with them. Highly recommended!!!

DISAPPOINTING 25 Mar. 2008
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I am very familiar with all these songs, having sung them myself while a student with Martial Singer. I think that her interpretation is better than many singers I've listened to, most of whom think they are singing Italian music. But I was really disappointed with her vocal technique. There are some really ugly sounds here, strangly juxtaposed, and as different one from the other as milk and vinaigre. Sometimes a really lush, large voice is evident; then, there is a tinny, harsh or whiney bit. It seems to me that, if you have a large voice, piano or forte are measured within your particular vocal diameter; and sounding strange for effect, if done too often, is just strange. Given the praise I've read of this singer, I was amazed.
