Product Description

Product Description

The authors of this book have done research into the cults and rites of Voodoo. They have witnessed ceremonies in which the Voodoosi use music and dance to reach a state of trance and experience divine power. Their photographs also reveal the dark side of Voodoo - its witches and magicians.

4.0 out of 5 stars Much more than just an exotic 'coffee-table' book., 27 Sep 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Voodoo (Photobook) (Hardcover)
The photography in this rather good book is both full of fascinating detail about African Vodou and very attractive in itself. The real plus is the text, which is intelligent, respectful and full of observations and insights into social customs and religious practises. Despite the title it is not concerned with Haitian Voodoo but with the belief systems of Benin in West Africa. I found it both easy to read and surprisingly rich, as well as aesthetically pleasing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Visually lush, decent information, 18 Oct 1998

This review is from: Voodoo (Photobook) (Hardcover)
The imagery in this book is beautiful. Photography and printing, excellent. Focused primarily on Voodoo in Benin, Africa. Most Voodoo texts cover primarily Hatian or American practices, so this book enjoys a bit of rarity. The information is fairly guidebook/expidition style. Not particularly sociological or studious, it presents recollections and learnings of the author and photographer as they traveled through Benin to photograph their subjects. Worth the price of admission for the quality of the images.

A nice coffee table book, good pictures, but some graphic. Oversized with quality cover and paper. Having recently traveled to Benin and received a fairly thorough (and interesting) introduction to the origins and continued practice of voodoo, this is one of the few books that focuses on the traditional forms and beliefs of African voodoo which continues to be practiced in Benin and surrounding areas, rather than the better known but much changed voodoo of Haiti or New Orleans. The book is in English rather than French, which is a real plus for me.
