This is the first bread maker I have bought. I was deciding between this one and the james andrew machine as they were the same price at the time of purchase. I chose this one despite the fewer reviews as the negative responses (3* or less) were only about gluten free bread which I'm never going to make. the free book was a bonus too. So several weeks into purchase and I think this is an excellent piece of kit and well worth the money. Its sturdy and easy to use. I've tried the quick receipe, the basic and the french receipe. As a family the french receipe won so I stick to that. Its easy. Glad I took the plunge. The bread is how I remember bread from my child hood - filling. I am looking forward to experimenting further over the coming months. If in doubt .... buy one. I bought the best one I could at the time and I've not been disappointed.

This is my second breadmaker, replacing an ancient Kitchenmaster VBM100 whose heater packed in. It was 13 years old, so it had a good run. I have made many loaves with the Shef and I am very pleased with it. On the basic setting the hopper drops down at the 2 hours 20 minute point, so if I am around at that time it is easy enough to push it back. I am sure that if I really wanted to I could stop it dropping one way or another.

Quite often I make a cheese and onion loaf. This involves less water due to the moisture in the cheese and onion. I use fresh onion, not dried onion. I find that I need to set the crust to light because it gets quite dark on the medium setting. This also happened with my Kitchenmaster. This is down to the type and amount of cheese.

The basic recipe I use is one I got with my Kitchenmaster and it works fine. I still have the recipe book. I have not looked at the free recipe book that came with the Shef in much detail. I am sure it is easy enough to adapt the recipes in there for the Shef.

I have made one or two wholewheat loaves but have not got it right yet. I had the same issue with my Kitchenmaster, so it is down to me, the ingredients used and the ratios.

There are plenty of good books out there for recipes and methods. If anyone wants the recipe I use for cheese and onion I can provide it. I guess I could add it as a comment or maybe as an update to this review.

One minor point - the cup provided has the 1 cup measurement right at the top, so this may cause a little bit of spillage with liquids, eg water. I still use the old one from my Kitchenmaster so not an issue. Same with the recipe book, it is free (£4.99 is the price on the back), so no moaning about that either.

My last bread machine was very, very old. This is great. All the functions work, and you can delay baking by up to 12 hours depending on your bake. The recipe book's a lovely touch, with inspiring and practical ideas. I have used the book's 750g recipes with this machine's 700g loaf setting, no problem. I'm trying to figure out how to make a successful loaf with 100% wholegrain flour, and will update when I do!

I've asked Shef to find out whether there's a food-safe, heatproof tape that will serve to keep the ingredient dispenser shut. It gets on my nerves that it opens - and makes a dent in large loaves if not closed manually - but this is true of all breadmakers with this feature.

I can't see any difference between this Shef machine and the Andrew James one (Andrew James Premium Bread Maker With Automatic Ingredients / Nut And Raisin Dispenser), except that you get a recipe book from Shef.

We are thrilled with the Bread Maker, we did get off to a difficult start but it was just one of those things, it was delivered in good time, plugged it in but it did not bake, obviously the heating element was faulty. Contacted the Customer service through Amazon within a matter of hours a replacement had been sent and arrangements to take away the faulty item. Very good service indeed. We have found the bread maker makes really brilliant bread, we have used the basic menu and not disappointed, we have tread it now with wholemeal flour, excellent, why have not bought one before, so much better that the bread from the supermarkets. We are now going onto to experiment with different types of bread and I am sure we will not be disappointed with the end result.

This machine is so simple to use and there is very little mess.
Make sure the ingredients are weighed out correctly (weighing scales are most definitely advisable).
This is a brilliant bit of kit and will not just be for show in your kitchen.
