As the only mass-market book on the T4 I could find, there's little competition, but that is no excuse for the poor standard of this book. Although the major compnents are covered and essential information is provided, it's disappointingly superficial.
The electrics section is particularly poor with badly-reproduced, fuzzy diagrams of only a selection of circuits (e,g. the MFI is covered but the power windows and central locking are not).
The book says that it is intended to supplement the regular owner's manual, but only an owner with extensive mechanical experience would be able to work with the limited information given.
While a book as short as this will naturally be limited in scope, this is no excuse for the many typos and simple errors in the text. The omission of the word "not" in several places where it is required is particularly worrying.
In short, this manual is better than nothing, but only just; buy it if desperate.

I bought this book mainly because it was the only book available for the T4 unless I was willing to part with over £100 for VW's workshop guidance manual for mechanics and have it posted to me from the US.
I read the previous review and decided it was still worth a shot because I really only wanted the manual to cover fairly basic stuff like servicing, brakes and other DIY items that could save me some money by not having to trudge along to VW. However, somewhat strangely it covers things like changing brake pads without letting you know how to change the discs. Now I am no mechanic and perhaps changing the discs is so simple it's just not worth mentioning but I'm betting that there are many people out there who would like a bit of guidance no matter how simple the job.
In a similar vein the book seems to cover only very limited areas unless you wish to remove the engine and rebuild it because half of the book seems to cover this task even though you'd have to be very competent to undertake that job in the first place. It tells you how to take the oil filter off but not what to remove underneath the van to get at the drain plug - it's little bits like these that seem so ill thought out. The air filter replacement is not covered at all and having done the job it is a bit of a problem getting the cover out of the way to get the new filter in. Various electrics and hoses have to be disconnected and I think this manual should cover the basics before it jumps into an engine rebuild.
All in all I think I have purchased a book that will gather dust in the bookcase and that I'll happily pass on to the next owner of the van. Buy it only in desperation or because you need something green in the bookcase to go with the curtains!

I bought this manual as its the only one I could find for the T4 1.9 diesel. To be honest it is a total waste of time. If you plan to tackle anything on this van yourself you probably know more than the book explains anyway. I feel really ripped off. Please save your money its not worth the expense. I had an electrical fault and thought the drawings would help. I am an electrical engineer so I can read drawings but the ones in the manual are rubbish dont bother buying it.

Far From Ideal

very very poor buy
I bought this book to assit in basic servicing. Sum of experience:- might be useful to wipe your hand with after you have changed the oil but apart from that 0 out of 100. Read more
